How do you label your bottles?

I have been writing the dates on mine with a dry erase marker, but apparently DH or my sitter can't figure out to use the oldest milk first or not rub off the marker.  To be fair, I'll re-emphasize to use the oldest milk first and some of it may be getting rubbed off in transport.  Either way, I keep having to dump milk because I have no idea how old it is and I'm getting really POed about it. What do you do?

Re: How do you label your bottles?

  • I send 4.  He usually eats 2 or 3 but I like them to have some extra milk in case I get there late or he is extra hungry.  It also depends what time DH gets off that day and picks him up.  I have a couple day's worth in the fridge.  Maybe I should freeze everything and just keep what I pumped yesterday in there?  I just started back to work so I wanted to make sure I had enough when we were still figuring out how much he ate from a bottle.

I guess that sounds like a simple way to solve my problem.  Sheesh.  I just feel so stressed right now I can't think straight.  Usually one bottle is older though, since I pump 3x at work and send an extra bottle.  Label that one with a 1.  Got it.

  • I use address labels and write the date on it and put it on the lid. They are easy to pull off without leaving a residue.

DH mentioned tape.  I wondered about the residue though so this is good to know.
  • I just line the bottles up in the fridge with the oldest at the front so whoever grabs it gets the oldest, Then I put the newest ones at the back. I never have more than 3-4 days worth at a time so I don't bother labeling.

@AmyG* Thank you!  That is helpful.  I work retail though, so my days off are actually Tuesday and every other Sunday, so I don't think I'll have to worry about the freezing.  I like the idea of labeling order to use, though.

@BootsOrHearts My problem is if I send one old one to the sitter, knowing if it came back.  But that makes sense that I can still keep more than a day's worth of bottles in the fridge as long as they are organized there.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas!

. This but I put it on the the side of the bottle

  • I've been using permanent marker and it comes off clean with a tiny bit of acetone on a paper towel, then I wash as I normally would.
  • I use scotch tape and fold over one end to make a tab to easily peel off. I have not had any issues with the tape leaving residue. I use a fine tip permant marker. DC wants the date pumped on the label and they do use the oldest first.
  • I use those tiny square white stickers from Avery.  They're like 1/2 the size of a postage stamp.  I usually put them on the lid or on the cap for the bottle.  When I pump I put date, time and volume.  Sometimes I add a 2nd sticker with #1, #2, etc. for our nanny and DH.
