convertible seat (again)

After watching all the horrific videos of crash tests/reenactments/etc online, I'm now scarred for life. Good grief y'all, I cried watching those things!! With that being said, I will not be forward facing the kid until he's much MUCH older. I realized today that he's probably too tall for his infant seat and we'll be buying a convertible seat this weekend. I've done some research and appreciate all of your input in my PP on which one to get.

HOWEVER - I have a serious question/thought - All of those reenactments and tests are for kiddos in cars that sustain front-end crashes. What if you were on the receiving end and were rear ended? Wouldn't that be the same forced neck trauma we're trying to eliminate, but from the back? Whichever way you collide, your body will travel towards the point of impact. Hit from the back, kid is rear-facing, kid flings to back, neck snaps anyway.

On a randomly-related note: When we had our baby shower, we received a cheap carseat and base that I just didn't feel safe with. This one only clipped into the base at the feet. You could literally use a pinky finger and fling the thing towards the back of the car. Our Graco clips into the base below the feet and the butt and only moves a tiny bit even when you TRY to lift it towards the back. I just wasn't willing to sacrifice my child's safety just because it was a discontinued product on clearance. Hurt a few feelings, but as all the videos (and loving advice) have said - times have changed and cars move faster now. They wouldn't be making up these 'rules' if more than one person hadn't been seriously injured or killed. Technology is a beautiful thing and I've forwarded many a video to some girlfriends who had their kid RFing *BEFORE A YEAR* because the kid was 20lbs already.

Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe the weather is affecting my allergies more than usual and I'm rambling in delusion. But think about it...

Re: convertible seat (again)

  • I was just reading this article on parenting.com, it addresses the rear end collision issue in the first paragraph on pg 3. Basically, the most severe car accidents usually involve front or side collisions so that it's still safer for kids to be rear facing for as long as possible. Hope that makes you feel a bit better!

  • I'm glad you're choosing to rf longer. We plan on doing it as long as possible. We will need a new car seat eventually because I wasn't as educated when we bought our britax and my lo will be too tall for it before I want to ff him so we'll be getting a diono radian.

I've also read the same thing as pp about rear accidents.
  • Oh and I wanted to say that when your lo is ready for a high back booster the graco nautilus is a great seat. :)

If you're switching to a high back booster instead of a RF convertible carseat that early, I think you missed the point of this post.

We just bought it and I checked it it has the new buckle. We aren't putting him in that seat yet. Once we start driving w both kids he will be nj it and he'll be almost 2.

Eta. My apologies. I was just agreeing ab the nautilus seat for the future.

16 months isn't really almost 2, but, it's your decision. Unfortunately the law to RF for 2 years hasn't caught up to the AAP recommendations yet.

I would strongly suggest you do some research on the appropriate time to ff your child. And you called the nautilus a hbb... I hope you I tend on using the 5 point harness at 16mo...

  • I called it a high back booster but it bas a 5 point harness that you can use first. I strongly suggest checking out csftl.org check out their info on rear facing for as long as possible. They suggest until at least 2 but strongly recommend until 4 or longer. There are even pictures of the bones and info on what a crash while ff can do to your lo. I'm glad the op took the time to research this instead of just ff her lo. I hope that it becomes a law in all states eventually.
