Ok first of all I just want to say that my baby is healthy and I'm so excited to meet them. I don't mind what sex they are, because they're my baby and they'll be the most loved little bundle of chub in the world.

Anyway

I had my 28wk check up this morning and the midwife says everything is great. Baby is upside down and heart is beating just fine. Then for some reason she had to and say, based on HR "I predict a boy". Well shit. I know it's only an OWT but why would she say that? HR has dropped from 145 2 weeks ago to 130 today.

So I'm not fussed but DH is freaking out. We've bought everything girly. The travel system has bows on it. Literally everything is girl flavoured. I warned my DH and dad but they went girl crazy! DH also has trouble with depression so he has a hard time dealing with changes like this. We also need to know so we can exchange things before time runs out.

Anyway, we're booked in for an elective 3d scan this evening. I don't mind because it will be nice to see baby again! I also don't feel bad about it because its a private scan place where you pay, so I've not screwed anyone out of an actual medical appointment. My dad is coming too.

That's what I was thinking. I think it will be nice to have the 3d scan anyway. Like I say, it's elective and we can afford it so why not? If it means we don't have to worry about the prospect of changing everything then I guess it's a good thing. The last thing I want to be doing with a newborn is exchanging all the stuff they need! Seriously, people have been buying us pink everything!

I'm just happy that my little bub is doing well. A tad on the small side, measuring about a week behind for fundal height, but I guess a smaller baby will be a bit more forgiving on my lady parts than a 10lb baby!

I wouldn't worry too much about a comment made about the heart rate. But I do understand where you are coming from, my travel system is pink/gray, my swing is pink, and DD's room was very girly, so I was worried about them being wrong. Luckily we are having another girl so I can reuse it all! Good luck at your elective scan tonight, have fun!

DS had a heart rate of 160 the whole pregnancy. Don't put money on the heart rate at all. It's not even a little bit true.

My baby has had a higher heart rate this whole time and it has been confirmed twice that he is a boy. I wouldn't worry about it, but hope you enjoy your u/s!

She was already told it was a girl at her A/S, I think that's the issue. Now they want to confirm since the MW is saying maybe boy.

OP, I wouldn't put too much stock in her comment, especially since the heart rate thing is just an OWT. I kind of side-eye your MW for saying that to you, especially when she should be well aware of your A/S results. Sure, these things aren't 100% accurate but it seems so strange that she'd just throw that comment out there. Hopefully your elective scan confirms one way or another, and you and DH can have some peace of mind.

We were so anxious to find out if we were having a boy or girl and did ALL of the goofy old wives tales we could find. They say the 'most accurate' was the heart rate but its all a bunch of hog wash. Everything we took said girl, girl, girl. Heartrate, string test, Japanese calendars, everything. Low and behold its a boy! It seems quite unprofessional that she would blurt that out and cause you to worry. Good luck at your scan tonight and tell that midwife to keep to herself!

I know it's a bunch of phooey, but once someone says it (someone professional) it puts the seeds of doubt in your mind.

I'm honestly happy with whatever comes out of my vajayjay, but like I said I really can't be exchanging things with a newborn in tow!

I'll see if I can upload some pics after the scan. Never thought I'd go for an elective 3d, but heck. Why not?

Edit: just to clarify this was not my regular midwife. She was just covering. I'm a bit pissed that she said it, based on the fact that its an OWT, but she probably thought she was doing us a favour.

The only thing that makes me doubt is that she wouldn't open her legs completely at the anatomy scan. We got a "pretty confident" rather than a definite. Otherwise I would have told this lady to stfu.

We should know for definite in a couple of hours! I'm just excited to see my baby on a screen again!

This DD has had a "boy's" heart rate more often than a girl's. It started low from the beginning, then was down to 110 at my 16 week appt, 160 at 20 weeks and 140 at 24 weeks. I think it depends more on their activity level at the time than their sex anatomy.

I'm carrying a boy and a girl. Granted at first Caroline's hb was much higher than Oliver's, but at an ultrasound yesterday they were within a few bpm of each other with Oliver being a little faster. They were both in the 130s. I wouldn't put much store in it, but hey it's a good excuse to see baby and just confirm everything. Enjoy seeing you LO today!

Well we just got back from the scan...

...it's a little lady!

Yup, she was showing us aaaall her business. Definitely a girl in there! We couldn't get clear shots of her face though because she had her hand infront, so they're letting me go back in a week so they can do it again for free.

I'm also pleased to report that she's had a growth spurt too. She's 50th percentile overall, which is great considering she was 18th at the anatomy scan.

So relieved that we don't have to exchange all that stuff!

FWIW, DD's heartrate was about 150-160 everytime... This LO is a boy and it's been 150-160 as well... It's an OWT

You'd think that midwives would know better than to use OWTs as predictions. I have half a mind to bill her for the elective scan. IMO if its not a fact, then keep it to yourself.

So she seriously said it like it was an actual determination not just a "oh looks like maybe you've got a boy in there!" kind of thing? Sometimes people joke about that kind of thing.

It seems like maybe she was making conversation...

Anyway, glad you're feeling confident now.

She was using the doppler and held the screen towards me and said "well, it's my prediction that it's going to be a boy". This is after i'd told her we were expecting a girl and had bought lots of girl stuff. When I said the monographer had said girl, she said "hmmm" and made a sort of not-so-sure face. If she'd have just said "oh ok" then i would have left it.

Oh and it turns out she didn't action my darn Rx for my iron supplements either. It's lucky I called to check it was ready to pick up. They had to get a dr to rush it through.

She was filling in for the regular midwife, so lets hope i don't see her again.
