Need info in RE: to 4yo OT eval

P had her OT eval a few days ago.  Her physical medicine doc ordered it because of her handwriting regression, and while in the past 2 months she has started writing her name again, it is backwards, even the letters.  She also has some mild sensory things like chewing on her shirt sleeves, etc.

The eval was about 20 minutes, the first 5 were her asking me some basic questions, and then she had her string some beads (6 I think), stack some blocks, mimic 3 different blocks, draw a circle, draw a straight link, put together a 3 piece puzzle (with 3 inch size square, circle & triangle) and write her name (which she did backwards).  She proceeded to tell me she didn't need OT and backwards was normal until age 7.  I asked for advice about her sleep habits, we had successfully got her into a travel bed in between ours & the dresser, but re-arranged the room, and put her mattress next to the wall, and we are back to square one.  She has to have that feeling of being closed in to sleep comfortably.  I asked about weighted blankets, and she shrugged me off.

These are all skills that EI tested dd1 & dd2 for at 18 months to 2 years.  And things she has been able to do since before she was 2..is this really all that's expected of a 4yo!?

DD1(4):VSD & PFO (Closed!), Prenatal stroke, Mild CP, Delayed pyloric opening/reflux, Brachycephaly & Plagiocephaly, Sacral lipoma, Tethered spinal cord, Compound heterozygous MTHFR, Neurogenic bladder, Urinary retention & dyssynergia, incomplete emptying, enlarged Bladder with Poor Muscle Tone, EDS-Type 3. Mito-Disorder has been mentioned

DD2(2.5): Late term premie due to PTL, low fluid & IUGR, Reflux, delayed visual maturation, compound heteroygous MTHFR, PFAPA, Bilateral kidney reflux, Transient hypogammaglobulinemia, EDS-Type 3

Re: Need info in RE: to 4yo OT eval

  • Was this a private eval? DD1's initial eval was about 90 minutes. It focused on fine motor, gross motor, motor planning, tactile, and vestibular because those were the areas where DD seemed to be struggling. I also filled out a few different questionnaires ahead of time. DD writes her letters backwards about 50% of the time, and we've been told by the OT, Dev. pedi, and the school that it's not a concern until 2nd grade. Just to give you an idea of how behind DD's fine motor skills were, she couldn't operate buttons, snaps, or zippers, use scissors, and she didn't have a dominant hand. Also her grasp was very weak. Despite that, she could write her name and draw a person which is why it took us so long to realize that her fine motor skills were so behind.
