3rd Trimester

Membrane sweep and induction scheduled

I had my last doctors appt yesterday!! Doctor asked if I wanted her to do a membrane sweep and asked if I wanted to be induced. I've never seen the color drain from my DHs face so fast.
She did the membrane sweep and set up our induction for this Sunday!! We go in Sunday night at 10p and she will be in early Monday morning. I can't believe how fast everything went!!
We went walking around afterwards and as DH was looking at clothes his hands were visibly shaking. I asked if he was ok. He said he was scared to death. I thought he would have been the "cool as a cucumber" type and would have to calm me down. I ended up having to calm him down.

Re: Membrane sweep and induction scheduled

  • I hope all goes well but unless there's a pressing medical concern, induction comes with a lot of risks (including increased risk of c-section). You might want to do a little research on the subject first:  https://www.childbirthconnection.org/article.asp?ClickedLink=1072&ck=10650&area=27

  • I agree with pp. Most drs don't want to induce you until you're well past your due date or if you have a medical concern that puts you or the baby at risk.

On top of that, why would you try to force you're baby out if he or she isn't ready?
  • As someone whose induction led to a very painful and undesired c/s, I would seriously question a need for an induction for non-medical reasons. If it's just so the doctor can ensure you've got the baby out by Monday morning and she won't have to deal with a surprise delivery later in the week, I would decline and wait until the baby is ready to come on its own.

  • I've had swelling in my legs, ankles and feet. They have gotten a little bit better but my BP has been high the last two times I've been to the doctor.
  • They didn't say anything about my urine. I'm just a little over 39 weeks.
  • Congrats! Super exciting :). Be ready for a backlash in the induction talk... I was induced at 39.2.. I think.. And it went great. At some point they realized he was flipped over and needed an emergency section.. But I was fine with that. In the end, I got my baby boy!! He's perfectly healthy, never needed oxygen or the light.. Nothing. Good luck!!
  • They didn't like how swollen I've gotten especially the past couple of weeks. I could hardly walk a few days which is hard to do when your in nursing.
I know that being induced isn't the best thing to do. My mom and MIL aren't excited about the idea either.
  • I think this is a personal decision between you and your dr. Your dr. went to medical school and has experience delivering babies. I would go with his advice versus random women on the internet. It's good to be informed, but I would trust a doctor over google or the bump...

Yea I trust my doctors 110%!! I don't think they would put me or my daughter in harms way. My friend got induced with both of her children. She didn't have any problems. We have the same doctor.

  • Did they tell you what drugs they will use?  And explain any risks of them?  And did you then go home and look the drugs up yourself?  I was induced because of high blood pressure, I trusted my care providers completely.  I found out a few months after my son was born that information about the drug they used that would have impacted my decision was kept from me by 3 different health care providers.
  • Membrane sweep worked!! Baby came on her own. She arrived at 715p on valentines day!! Best gift a mommy and daddy could ask for!!
  • Congratulations!
