Jaw pain

I have jaw pain that came on all of a sudden today...I feel like my jaw is misaligned and my teeth are not matching up like usual. Anyone else have this or is this something random and non pregnancy related? The only thing I could think was the relaxin could be affecting my temporal mandibular joint.
Thoughts?

Re: Jaw pain

  • Have you had your wisdom teeth out? I was determined to keep mine because they didn't bother me, until I woke up one morning with an infection. It felt like my entire jaw and teeth had shifted entirely. I had my wisdom teeth taken out as soon as I could after that.

  • YES YES YES! omg. I tried searching this online and found nothing useful. I clench my teeth and apparently grind sometimes at night. I have always known that but in the last week it has been excruciating at times! My jaw feels misaligned in different ways and sometimes it changes throughout the day. Some days it was more painful in my ear and sometimes on just one side. I have no answer but I can totally related and commiserate. I have a dentist appt in April which I hope I can last till.  I have a feeling that I may be developing TMJ that may or may not go away. Suggestions that I got from friends were to either get a mouth guard for sleep or the cheap ones from the drug store ($45 vs $250). DH uses a night guard, we are going to be the sexiest new parents on the block.

Anyway, I hope you find relief. If you do, let me know what helps!

  • This happens to me sometimes. I have had my wisdom teeth out since I was 15 but I also have TMJ. My jaw will hurt occasionally and my teeth seem all out of whack for a few days especially if I've eaten anything chewy or had a very stressful day, I tend to clench my teeth when I'm upset or mad without realizing it.
  • I have been having this too.... came out of the blue. Same symptoms you describe. I have yet to make a dentist appt. I also have had my wisdom teeth out. Crazy.

Seriously-it is crazy, I have been looking online to self diagnose---hoping it gets better if not, I may see a chiro to get my jaw adjusted.
  • There was a pregnant lady in my prenatal yoga that couldn't open her mouth more than an inch.  It came on as she was nearing the end of her 3rd trimester.  The yoga teacher suggest that she massage some lavender oil where the jaw connects to the skull for some relief.  I haven't seen her since, think she gave birth already.  Good luck and I hope you feel better.
  • This happens to me but I have TMJ. I also grind my teeth bad at night. I had to get a mouth guard (nicer than the store bought ones) made at the dentist that I have to wear everynight. It's a life saver!
  • Also to add, my dentist told me that sometimes weird things happen to your teeth during pregnancy that can't be explained. He sees it all the time. I'm an example. I had to get a route canal early on in pregnancy Bc of a tooth infection. Well my tooth is now dead but it still bothers me. Absolutely no reason it should but he thinks it's just caused by pregnancy.

    Good luck!
  • I've had this off and on for years an I had my wisdom teeth out at 16. I have a friend that is a nurse and she said it's probably TMD, not TMJ, and it's most likely I grind my teeth at night and she recommended I get a night guard. So far I've had it happen twice this pregnancy, once at the beginning and it lasted about 2 weeks, and again a couple of weeks ago and it lasted about a week. I didn't get a night guard I just dealt with it and ate soft foods, tried to not open my mouth to wide, etc. And everything you described is how I felt, but with the pain mostly focused on one side. Just know that eventually it does get better and go away. I'm sorry you're dealing with this and hope it goes away soon for you.
  • I have TMJ really bad from my wisdom teeth being removed but it was manageable and starting to get better after seeing the chiropractor (in fact there are some bones in your neck that can affect it). Anyway, it has gotten a lot worse being pregnant and the dentist thinks I'm clenching my teeth at night. I am hoping this is just another pregnancy symptom and that it will go back to my normal TMJ after the baby is here. He recommended putting ice on it before bed.

  • The relaxin hormone affects the whole body, even the jaw. So does swelling (think of how many pregnant women develop carpal tunnel syndrome). Pregnancy can also be stressful, and sleep can be fitful, which can cause clenching and grinding and tension in general. It'll probably be fine within a couple of weeks after delivery.
