Unquenchable Thirst

Wow. I have never been thirsty like this. No major changes in diet or activity. I have my glucose test to do and am hopeful that this isn't a sign of struggling with sugar.

I know water is the best thing for hydration, and that it's full of empty calories, but has anyone had this problem and found Gatorade helpful? Yes I get the irony of asking about Gatorade while expressing concern about the upcoming glucose test!!

Re: Unquenchable Thirst

  • I don't know anything about Gatorade other than that I can't stand it, but I've been really thirsty too lately.  It's on my list of questions for the doctor on Friday.

  • I've also been abnormally thirsty lately. On top of water I've been drinking a lot of Gatorade & Propel. I just had my GTT done today so I'm hoping it doesn't have something to do with sugar levels too!

  • Do you find any difference when you're drinking the sports drinks or are you still brutally thirsty?
  • Propel doesn't have any sugar in it. I think there is also some line of Gatorade that's either low-sugar or sugar free, I just can't think of what it's called right now.

  • I honestly haven't noticed a difference no matter what I drink. I'm just as thirsty.

  • I am dying of thirst, all day every day. It's the worst at night though.

I just had my GD test and I passed, so I don't know that it's related.

  • My "we care about you but really just want to make sure you won't cost us any extra money" insurance healthy living whatserface said I should be drinking 100oz a day of water. So there is a number.

Gatorade and most sports drinks include a good amount of electrolytes, which also help quench your body's needs. I feel like people focus so much on the liquid portion of dehydration and the important electrolytes are forgotten about. They are the tweets to your body's Twitter. Without the electrolytes, your body cannot conduct and send the important signals that control everything in your body.

  • I have been very thirsty with both pregnancies, and for what it's worth I didn't have gestational diabetes with the first (haven't had my test yet this time).

  • I have extreme thirst, also. At night while sleeping it is the worst. I drink and pee and drink and pee. I was this way in the first trimester and it seems to be getting worse lately.
I might buy a little Gatorade, but I'm not cool with the amount of sugar in it and hate any artificial sugars. My dr said not to consume any while pregnant. Not sure what to do. I'll have to look into propel since it doesn't have sugar at all.
  • Add me to the list of the unquenchable water drinkers. Doesn't help the always having to pee situation.

  • I'm really thirsty too. Worse when I eat out instead of making my own food (more salt). Try coconut water for a more natural alternative to water. It has natural sugars, but less than other juice or soda.
  • I second the coconut water! I like Zico brand because it doesn't have any added sugars; if you're drinking another brand just check the ingredients to make sure they're not sneaking anything extra in (that is, if you don't WANT any extra sugar - some people like the way it tastes!).

Ditto coconut water. It's got potassium and other nutrients and super hydrating. For some it's an acquired taste. You can add some pineapple juice or cranberry to cut it if you're not a fan but I find it delish.
  • I've had this problem as well. For me Gatorade has not really helped. I actually drank a huge glass in the middle of the night and it made me vomit after laying back down. At night I think water is best. I drink a good amount of water each day too I would say close to if not over 100 oz. I think it's just a pregnancy thing but I have my glucose test on Monday so let's hope it isn't a diabetes thing.... If anyone figure out the mystery of never ending thirst I'd be interested in your suggestions!
  • Not to be all lame and alarmist, but sometimes being insanely thirty is a sign of high blood pressure/pre-e. Might be good to just keep up on BP if you've got that exaggerated "thirsty like I just ran a mile" feeling.

  • @beegirl99 I've been drinking a lot if coconut water and the days I do drink it I am not quite as thirsty. I hadn't really realized it since I am all out of it right now. Better stock up!

I'm very thirsty all the time too. Extreme thirst and increase urine output can be a sign of diabetes. But it's common for pregnant ladies to be thirsty even without GD. I actually have dreams where I'm chugging down water because I'm so thirsty but can't satisfy my thirst. Then I wake up and have a drink. I passed my GTt test and do not have high blood pressure (110/60). If I drink Gatorade I like to dilute 1/3 Gatorade 2/3 water, otherwise it's too sweet.

  • When I told my doc about my frequent and horrible leg and foot cramps she said I should drink Gatorade.

    REALLY?!?!?!?!

I had severe high blood pressure with DD (199/103 at one point)... I remember being so insanely thirsty and kinda surprised that I passed my Glucose test with her. (like 7-8 bottles of water a day that were 8-10 oz each plus juice, milk etc).  I had no idea it was a sign of hypertension.

This time I haven't been nearly as thirsty.  And so far my blood pressure has been good.

  • My blood pressure has been normal so far. Thanks ladies for the ideas.
  • BP and all labs are normal for me but I still have this need to constantly be drinking. I ran out and got some Pedialyte and that helps quite a bit (and it doesn't hurt that it tastes good).
  • Yup always thirsty too. If you don't want the sugars in Gatorade Google homemade electrolyte drinks. There are tons of recipes like water with orange slices and a few other fruits etc.
