Same sex twin naming question

Hi ladies!  I am a little over 17 weeks with twins and we found out this past Friday that our di/di twins are both boys!  We already have a DS who will be turning two around the time we are expecting the twins to get here.  I have sort of a silly question for moms of same sex twins.  When you have two names picked out, how did you decide who got what names?  Did you assign them before they were born, wait until you saw them?  I'm just curious how other moms decided.

Re: Same sex twin naming question

  • We waited until they were born to name them, but iirc the last time we had this question I was in the minority. I think most assigned ahead of time.

  • Planning to do it after birth, my babies are rebels and I am not sure they will stay put, or that the ob will take them out in the right order if I have a c/s.
  • We had a family tradition to honor- so we never assigned names while they were inutero.  The first boy had to be named John- as was his dad, grandpa, great grandpa etc....  And that is what I told the Drs and nurses while waiting for my c/s to start- "First one out is John and second one out is Nicholas"  It is never a given that baby A inutero will be the first one out.
  • We decided that the first one out would have the name that comes second alphabetically (Baby A gets the "L" name and Baby B gets the "A" name) so that they would each come "first" in something. That being said, we recently found out that we will probably hafta have a c-section. So if Baby B comes out first, I'm not sure we will switch her name since we've been calling them by their names the whole time.

  • My story is pretty much a copycat of HappyYahoo.

I'd been on hospital bedrest for the last 10 weeks of my pregnancy and so even the MFM and nurses would start referring to them by their names during my daily NST, not always as A and B (not in my actual chart, of course.)
I was a little anxious that somehow they would get mixed up at birth, but I had a growth scan a few days before I went into full labor and their weights were a few ounces different. And B flipped during labor, so I had a c/s, and it was clear who was who since A was cephalic. But, in my case, their growth scan weights were spot on with their birth weights, so that only confirmed their identities.

And their names really seem to match their personalities 110%

but there is not right way nor wrong way to do make this decision :)

  • I had my names picked and picked who was what based on their "personality" in the womb. I had one very feisty girl and chose a name that I thought suited her. You could always wait until you meet them and then decide which names work for which.

  • We are having two boys as well and once we had decided on names we gave A one name and B the other. We would joke about Parker being the wild child so he is B because he is always moving and flipping and in a different position on ultrasound and Mason is calm and moves but nothing like his brother! It pretty much was just a thing DH and I came up with and I told him if we end up with a c-section we have to make sure we know which baby comes out first, hopefully we will know!

  • I had a name picked out since I was little so we decided that would be the name of whoever was born first. My husband is the third generation of first born boys with the same middle name so that was easy. It took us a little while longer to find a second name we both liked and when we did we knew that would be the second borns name. Their names completely fit them, I think. In utero we called them Righty and Lefty since they were each pretty much always on their own side.

  • We named them in utero. Baby A was Drake because the name seemed more daring and active and he definitely was. Baby B was Bentley because he was much calmer and more relaxed. Their personalities still hold true. Drake is daring and sneaky looking most of the time where Bentley plays it safe and looks very innocent all the time. They are both into everything and very loving but their "air" is different. As I type this Bentley is laying on his couch playing with his feet and drake is sitting on the activity table grinning at me. Fun times.

  • We've assigned names based on their personalities on the ultrasound.

  • We picked out our top 3 names for each and waited until they were born to name them. Except after they were born I thought they just looked like babies, not a specific name. So waiting didn't help us decide. We ended up just going with our top choices and randomly assigning them.
  • It may sound silly but I just knew what name felt right for which baby since I was about 27/28 weeks.

  • Definitely a personal decision on this one. We decided on names before we even left the doctor's office (we'd been arguing over it for months tho LOL we just hadn't "settled" since we didn't know the sexes) - by the end of the week, I'd decided which one was going to be which.

  • We picked first names we like and the middle names we chose were family names.  Baby A's middle name is the same as my middle name (We wanted the first born to have my middle name).  Baby B's middle name is her BIL's name made a little more feminine.  So, whichever first name fit the middle name was how we chose.

I know, kind of backwards, but it worked for us.  And our girls fit their names PERFECTLY.

  • We named them before they were born... but during the excitement of delivery and whisking babies off to the NICU (I didn't get to hold them) things changed! My husband accompanied the girls to the NICU and assigned names, but the reverse of what we had discussed. Not sure if he was confused regarding our earlier discussion, but I really didn't mind, and now I can't imagine it any other way.

  • We picked names and chose who was who in womb just in case anything were to happen before they were born.  We didn't want to have to make any tough/emotional decisions...  Sounds really morbid, but it was comforting to me.  Good luck!

  • We are going with alphabetical order. DD has an A name and baby A will have a B name and baby B a C name (at least that's where we are right now). It just kind of worked out that way and I like it. I know baby A might not be born first, but I still know where they each are, so I don't think I could switch it now even if they are born "out of order".
  • We are having didi girls in 2weeks, and since they are baby A and baby B he wanted to stick with names of each letter. So our baby A is Alaina and baby B is Brianna! We just happened to agree on names. I wasn't convinced I wanted to choose before seeing them, but 2 names is a lot of pressure!
  • we had boy names picked out and I was pretty sure I knew which baby name they were each going to end up with based on their personalities in utero, but I waited until they were born to give them their names for sure. As soon as they were born I just knew I had named them correctly.

  • Thanks for the input ladies!  It is really interesting to see how everyone decided.  Now we just have to figure out names!
