Does your LO bite into whole sandwiches?

Not just sandwiches, but things like wraps, tacos, hamburgers, etc?

DD does not. I'n sure it's not a big deal, but should we practice it? She doesn't seem to get the concept of biting down to get a piece off with her teeth and then pulling away. Even if I give her a piece of a bagel, for example, she either chews on it or picks little pieces off with her fingers. She even picks apart grilled cheese. She has plenty of teeth so I don't think that's the issue.

  • This is Dexter, too.  If I take a ham and cheese sandwich and flatten it and cut it into tiny bite size pieces he'll pick the up and eat them.  Same for a PB&J and grilled cheese.  But wraps and subs he won't.  Seems like my other kids started understanding how to bite and pull for those more around the age of 2.

  • Yes, she does. I usually cut up 75% of a meal & leave her a slice/piece to actually bite into herself.

DS, who is 3, still has trouble sometimes, though! He will bite into something & then freak out that's it's too big & we have to tell him, "bite down & pull!" It's aggravating to say the least, lol.

  • She will nibble a bit, but if I break it up and give her a fork, she will go to town. My older one, it took forever to get her to eat sandwiches (even when she was 3, she still had a tough time with them). She still doesn't do great with them.

  • Yes, DS will take bites off of things.  I either have to make it big enough that there is no way he can fit it in his mouth (like a half sandwich, a half bagel, etc.) or small enough that it is bite size.  Nothing in between works.
  • He tries, but usually doesn't get all of the layers:)

  • He will eat a whole piece of toast but not a sandwich, he takes it apart. James still deconstructes most of his sandwiches/burgers/hotdogs...

DS actually prefers to bite into things now, so we give him 1/4 of his sandwich at a time or the whole muffin, etc.  He actually gets upset now if we tear off pieces of certain foods.

  • I think it depends on the thickness of the sandwich for DD.  She has the bite/pull thing down, and tears with her teeth by jerking her head to one side, but she won't attempt it for a sub or hamburger or anything too thick.  She does better if we hold the sandwich out to her than if she holds it herself.  Subs she definitely deconstructs, then bites thru the middle of the bread, but that may just be because she's enjoying playing with the food.

This is Audrey too. She's going through an independent eater phase, I can't help her with anything.

The bolded.  Sometimes she wants "bites" and sometimes she wants it "whole" so I give her a mix of both and she alternates.

  • G will eat a pb&j and a grilled cheese without taking it apart.
  • LO thinks she's awesome when I say "use your teeth" and hold it up, wait for her to clamp, then yank it back. I did that 1,499,373 times and now she eats sandwiches.
