(NBR) Tipping on Delivery

I have been ordering an embarrassing amount of take-out this pregnancy. (perhaps this should be a FFFC)  But I always find myself a little out of sorts every time it comes to the tip line for the delivery driver.  I know where I stand at restaurants (20% for adequate service; up or down from there), but I'm not sure what the appropriate tip is for delivery.  Do you do a flat fee?  Do you tip a percentage (10/15/20)? Do you modify your tip amount if there's a separate "delivery fee" line item?

Re: (NBR) Tipping on Delivery

  • When I was a driver for Pizza Slut, we were paid at least minimum wage, and a very small portion each shift to cover our vehicle "overhead". 20% is not needed, but something is better than nothing.

  • I usually tip around 10-15%-ish for delivery. The drivers are making more than the $3/hour a server does, but still usually not much more than minimum wage, so I figure it's a good middle-of-the-road amount. I don't adjust based on a delivery fee, because that doesn't actually go to the driver. Also, I don't ever add the tip when I first order (e.g. on a delivery website) because at least half the time it takes them forever to get here because they've already gotten their tip.

  • I am a total freak because I don't think I've ever actually ordered take-out!  I'll have to fix that soon :)
  • I have always tipped 20% for delivery.

  • I usually just do a standard 3-4 dollars.

  • When it's just food for DH and I like pizza or subs, we usually tip about $3 since the place we order from isn't far away. If we have family over and it's a lot of food, we tip more.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • We only order pizza. I like to give $5.

  • I usually tip $3-5 depending on what we had delivered. I also tip the same when I pick up takeout.

  • I tip that regardless if delivery fee, that doesn't usually go to the driver.

  • I usually tip $5, regardless of how much the order is. That is until our pizza place started charging a $3 delivery fee. I know that doesn't go to the driver, but that really adds up. So now DH will go to pick it up instead. Plus a lot of places give a reduced price for pick up. On the rare occasion that I do get take out, now I only tip $2-3. I used to work at a pizza place, and that was pretty average tip size, before the delivery fee got tacked on. Plus, where I am their min wage is $10ish/hour, and they get bonus pay for using personal vehicles, so they get paid decently.

Usually $5, more if it is a big order for multiple people - then usually about $2 per person that had food delivered.

  • In Oregon all people who work in the restaurant world make at the very least min wage. So for delivery and pick up I tip 10%. When it comes to the actual restaurant it depends on the service so I tip between 15-25%.

I was a delivery driver in college. If you're tipping two bucks for a pizza the drivers might start putting your pizza on back order so to speak.... The drivers usually get to know addresses and tip ratios pretty quickly ;)

  • Even though this title said NBR, when I read the title I thought this was about tipping at labor and delivery!
That is exactly what I thought and the reason I opened the thread. I was thinking, man they really do it differently in the states. As if it wasn't already expensive enough, you guys tip too?? haha
At least I wasn't alone in my thought process. I was thinking, "Nope. They will get enough of my money!" Lol

I only give $2 as well. I'd honestly pick it up b/c we're nearly walking distance but home alone with a napping baby means I can't leave. The last guy is lucky he got that. He rang the doorbell despite standing instructions not to. I've worked food service & retail, my dad is a restaurant manager, my expectations are high.

Where I live, most of the pizza places charge a delivery fee so really I'm paying a total of $5. Plus I think they make minimum wage so it's not like a waitress that makes most of their money on tips. I may be bitter, but I worked for minimum wage at an ice cream shop during school and I never got any tips when I probably should have. In my head they are getting more than I did!
  • We tip 20%. I never thought to tip any less. I'm paying for a sevice just like when I go out to eat, get my hair cut, or get a mani/pedi.

  • I usually tip $3-$5 if they bring it up to my door, regardless of the delivery fee. If they call me and have me come get it in their car then I don't tip.

So you made minimum wage at some point in your life. Were you also adding miles and wear and tear to your personal vehicle too? Did your minimum wage also have to cover that? I bet your a lousy tipper no matter what.

"Uh, don't spit on that cops burger."

  • I can't find it now, of course, but a few months ago I read an article that said to tip delivery drivers 15-20% but never less than $3. So even if your order is $10 you'd still tip $3.

Delivery fees are usually given to the restaurant, not the driver, so you tip on top of whatever fee is already included.

Yup, it use to never happen, but it's changed over the last year. Now it's about 50-50 whether they're brining it up or making us come out. It so annoying, kind of defeats the point of ordering delivery IMO.
