For those thinking about bleaching/lightening your hair.....

I am a hairstylist and i decided to re-lighten my hair last night, well when they say hormones can do crazy things to your hair trust me they can!. after several lightening sessions and toning sessions i ended up going dark thanks to my lovely piss yellow/orange hair. My hair has never done that especially on virgin hair. so word of caution when coloring lighter colors, have your stylist perform a strand test to see what will happen first. Save yourself $$$ and your tears.

  • Good to know! I've been thinking I would try and get back to my natural color. I can't see spending $150+ on highlights anymore once LO is born.

  • I am going blonde this weekend. I am using a box though and doing it at home. Good thing about that is I can just buy a darker box and go back if I need to. I hope I don't have to though because for whatever reason, my mind is set on being blonde right now.

  • I am a natural blonde, but the last 5 years or so I've been "brightening" it up some, and sometimes add some red low lights for fun. Well we moved to our current house last summer, and we're out in the country on well water. Very rusty well water. Bleach sucks up rust. So my hair is orange, like really really orange. And it also makes it really stringy and limp. :( I'm in the process of growing it out and no more fun hair for me.

Shimmer lights is what you need! it will do wonders, you can order it online or they sell it at Sally's if there is one near you. it can be drying so only use it 1-2 times a week. i also use Malibu packets for hard water once a week, i have a lot of iron in mine so everything turns orange.

I have tried a Malibu packet but I had a hard time getting it warm enough with a hair dryer so I'm gonna have a stylist do it next time. I think I'm gonna do Malibu treatments occasionally to help it look a little better, but I still want to grow it out because I am too lazy to keep up with it. But I have never heard of shimmer lights! Thanks, I'll look into it!

Doesn't hard water suck?! We have a softener and treatment system that helps a lot, but it isn't 100%.

  • I'm a natural blonde and went dark brown. I want my blonde hair back so bad!
  • I had to go dark.  I love my highlights and am now still having a hard time getting used to my natural very dark brown hair.  I just can't see me having to find a baby sitter once every six weeks to color my hair when I can spend that time with my precious baby!  My friend does my hair at his house since he works at one of the most expensive salons in the city, so he usually can only do it on Monday or Tuesday evenings.  He only charges me $40 instead of the $140 his salon charges.  There is no way that I am going to be at work all day, and then gone from my baby just for my light hair, so dark hair it is for probably a long while!

Me too. I'm thinking about trying Color Oops to remove the dye. Anyone have any experience with this?

  • This happened to me my last pregnancy. I am dark brunette and tried to go just one shade lighter. Holy orange hair!!! I had done it so many times before and nothing happened so I was shocked!! Luckily some really dark brown die covered it. I'm actually touching mine up tonight and am kinda nervous

  • I'm a hair stylist too and this is the exact reason why I have some hideous new growth going on right now! My hair was so orange the last time I tried to lighten it while pregnant, so I'm trying to wait. Not sure how much longer I can stand it though.

@PurrBox I used color oops once in college when i tried to dye my hair Auburn and it came out fire engine red. OOPS! It worked alright but turns, your hair to like the lightest shade its been may be a shade or two lighter and dies the hair a bit. Good luck!

So other than the possibility of a weird color outcome...what's the consensus about highlighting and coloring in first trimester? I keep reading conflicting things about yes it's ok & no it's better to wait. I have an appt on Friday for highlights/lowlights (always in foil...no color applied to scalp, no toner etc). Is that generally deemed ok? Sounds like a lame question to call my OB about so thought I'd ask you ladies first! ;) Help a sista out!
i've always heard/been told as long as you have good ventilation while having your hair colored, you should be fine.

  • I think color is safe?  I read somewhere that the ingredients that were considered unsafe during pregnancy aren't in modern hair dyes.

Glad you all mentioned the weird coloration though.  I stopped coloring my hair a few years ago, but I have way more grey than I thought I would at 33 so now I'm considering coloring it again.  Guess I'll wait...

  • So I'm not planning on doing any highlights right now.. but I've noticed my hair texture is changing again!! When I was little my hair was pin straight, when I went through puberty it turned curly. Over the years the curly have turned more into beachy waves intermingled with some spiral curls.. but now BAM my roots seem to be getting more spiral curly. Oh man...
