Words Sound Like Swear Words

We don't have anyone that swears around DD, so I know she hasn't picked up on the real words. But it is so embarrassing when she decides to yell "sit" or "fork" when we are in public. I'm sure you can guess what it sounds like she's saying. We get some very dirty looks from people. My husband and I just try to say things like... "Yes, you are sitting down." or "Yes, that's a fork." It's getting to the point where we dread going anywhere. And it doesn't help that "sit" is one of her favorite words to say.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

    I guess I'd rather that than the alternative. I dropped something in front of DD and said "shit" ( I rarely curse, but whatever I had dropped made a big mess). That became her new favorite word, and she used it quite appropriately. I was mortified that she was going to start our church's preschool program at 2 and get booted for cursing. When we stopped making a big deal out of it, she got tired of it and moved on.

    My LO says Truck as f*ck. On the way to daycare, we often pass a line of trucks and he's in the back seat shouting his little head off excitedly about the trucks while I have my window open talking to security. "I swear he's excited about the trucks!"

    We've also had him try to say that he wanted his Elmo doll off his toy truck, so that was "Elmo truck off". There was also the "No trucking jammies" incident.

    Clock comes out as c*ck. Oddly enough, sit and fork come out just fine! We just repeat the correct word and figure the rest of the world will deal.

    It doesn't seem like anything to be embarrassed by.  All toddlers struggle with pronunciation.  It's crazy to me you would be getting dirty looks really.

    DD said drink as d*ck for awhile and one time at dinner she yelled "daddy wants d*ck" over and over again.  We obviously laughed but then just concentrate on repeating the proper pronunciation and don't let it bother you.  Totally normal!

DS is having some trouble with "coat" and gets really excited to put it on. He was definitely hollering "cock cock cock!" at Panera last weekend.

    Yep.  DD has a fascination with clocks right now, but she can't pronounce the "L" so it comes out as "cock."  We repeat the right pronunciation afterwards, but it is what it is.  Toddlers don't always say words correctly.  Don't be embarrassed.

    Lurking from the 9-12month board.  We have a peacock hanging in our kitchen and DD has started to take a real interest in it - I say "peacock" and she says "ka" and I swear she thinks she's saying the correct word.  I'm sure it's only a matter of time until it's just "c*ck" as I've heard LOs learning to talk will sometimes drop a syllable or letter.

    This whole thread has been wonderful to read and I think anyone who gives you dirty looks has lost all joy in their life.
