Acupuncturist can act as Doula

I'm sharing this because it's new info for me and I know there've been a few Doula discussions here.

Yesterday my acupuncturist told me that she can essentially perform the duties a Doula would (she didn't use the word "Doula").  She had already told me acupuncture can help start labor if needed when the time comes (a little more fine tuned than a pedicure lol).  She said she could come to the hospital for the delivery to help with pain management, nerves, or taking the burden off DH if he needs a break.

I had been debating about using a Doula but since I already know my acupuncturist and have had such good results with her, I feel more comfortable going that route.  It's another option for those of you looking for this type of support.

Re: Acupuncturist can act as Doula

  • That is an interesting option, and I've heard great things about acupuncture being used to help start labor/position baby.  But question...before you hire her to be your doula...do you know if she has any training or experience in birth? Positioning? Pain management outside of acupuncture (which may or may not be possible/something you are comfortable with in the moment?) I know doula's go through a lot of extensive training/education to provide the services they do, including being a great advocate for their patients.  I would just recommend looking into what she'll bring to the table outside of acupuncture before you make a final  decision, maybe interview a few doulas to get a feel for their services as well.  Just a suggestion, it's good to know you have someone you are comfortable with to be by your side no matter what services she provides :)

  • Good point.  This particular acupuncturist specializes in fertility, pregnancy, and L&D, but the one my dad sees (obviously) doesn't.

I'm still very up in the air about this whole thing, but having this option makes me feel a little less overwhelmed :)
