CPW: WWJ13 Do?

edited February 2014 in July 2013 Moms
I'm thinking of opening a small business in town - knit/crochet/yarn/crafting. DH is VERY supportive. I'm SCARED, so here's my first CPW. (Because I have to get the business case, funding and store up and running before I lose my mat leave pay in May)

  • Follow your dream!  I made a decision yesterday to ask to be PT (for me that was a huge deal and I was really scared).  I read daily devotions from Joyce Meyers and yesterday it said to not let fear stop you from your dreams and to have courage.  So I say have courage and go for it!  :)  So much easier said than done but it could be so worth it!  :)  GL to you!

  • How fun! I love shops like that. Especially when they have little classes or demonstrations.

  • I chose SS but I should have read the comments first.

I thought at first you meant a store where you would sell your items that you made, and I used to do that for a few years just out of the house (crochet items) but that "market" has become super saturated where I live and people sell their items for next to nothing just to compete with one another but they do it and don't realize they are only paying themselves like $3/hr.

    Not worth it.

However, a crafting store to buy supplies could be a GREAT market if there are no/few others in your area- because like I said, many people are in to the crochet fad lately.

I think you should totally follow your dreams!!

  • Go for your dream! I'm starting a dream job next month, it's 1 dream job out of 2453 dream jobs I have! The way I look at it is, it may not work out but it is my dream and I want to experience it!
  • Do it!!! I want to open a bakery some day... there isn't one in our town but I'm wondering if that's because no one would go there...

    I'll live vicariously through you!

  • Any way you could do both to make sure you can get your business up and running and in a good state and them maybe quit your government job?
This would be optimal, but I feel like I would be missing out if I weren't there for the first few months, at least, to see things get off the ground. Although this just made me think of something. I can apply for an additional year of unpaid leave from work and still have a job to go back to.... Maybe I should look into that!!! :)

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but at my job if you're on leave you can't work elsewhere/make money by other means. Maybe it's different in Canada.

  • I voted to go for it. But I'm a little biased because I'm in the process of starting my own business. I've started an LLC, got a business license, and starting to do a website. I't feels like a crazy ride, but I'm excited!

It's different....my husband is currently on leave from his government job running his own company!!

I say go for it.....we have been going through this and my dh is much happier running his own business....sure, there are sacrifices, but it's all give and take, it's at least worth a shot.....

And something to consider.....there's a company down here that offers sewing classes for kids and it is hugely popular!!!! Good luck with it......
