Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is it bad that DS still takes 2-3 naps/day?

DS is 9 months and still takes 2-3 (usually 3) naps per day... Approx 2-3 hours each. Should I start bringing him to fewer naps? Or wake him? He's a good sleeper (of course we have good and bad days/nights) or should I just follow his cues??
*also he sleeps approximately 7-7 with 1 wake up to eat.*

Re: Is it bad that DS still takes 2-3 naps/day?

  • My DD is 10 1/2 months and we are still on 3 naps a day thinking about a transition to 2. She is currently up 2 hours and down 2 hours. Our Ped suggested that we try 2 a day so when the time comes a transition to 1 wont seem impossible. Our DD will sleep 7:30-6:30 with no wake ups for food. Never cut a nap short. if they are exhausted it means their little boddies are getting to recoop for something going on with them.
  • let me rephrase that....you "shouldnt" wake a baby deep in sleep

  • My 11 month old does two 2hr naps and usually a 45min nap before supper.  She then does a good 11-12 hrs at night (waking to feed but right back to sleep).

I've worked with many young children that NEED their sleep.  If you are able to accommodate the naps then there is no reason to change it.  When the are ready for less naps you will start to notice changes (takes longer to fall asleep, wakes earlier etc).

  • As an adult, I frequently find that if I *only* get 7 hours of sleep, I eventually start feeling worn down and needing a few nights of 9-10 hours.

my daughter takes 2 naps at 11 months, either 2 2 hours, or a 45 minute and 3+ hour one, and sleeps 11-13 hours a night, no wake ups. She even will lay, awake, in her crib, completely at peace and wanting to be left alone. Some kids (and people!) just require a lot of sleep to recharge and reset their bodies. i am insanely active when I'm up-i work out 1.5-2 hours in the morning from 4-6, and am on the go with her, walking to the store, at the park, etc and she is a very very active baby. so that comes into play too

  • DD is 10 months and usually takes two 1.5 hour naps per day and sleeps 10-12 hours at night.  As long as LO is generally happy I say you're fine.  I know DD gets super cranky if she misses a nap or if she's up too long without sleep.
  • Wow, some of your babies nap A LOT!  That sounds like heaven!  We're lucky if we get 1.5 hours of naps total and 8pm-7am with one wakeup to eat.  My kid hates sleep!  Lol

  • 2 naps is normal and they stay with 2 naps  untl they are over a year old. Most babies will lose the 3rd nap by 10 months, but again, it sounds like he sleeps jst fine at night, so i wouldnt worry about it.
  • still on the 2 naps. the 2nd is usually shorter then the first

  • My daughter turned 1 just a week ago. She still takes 3 naps a day as well. She is more of a cat napper. She only sleeps from 30 mins to an hour for each nap. Most of the time she sleeps great at night. She goes to bed around 7:30.
  • My DD typically takes 3 naps a day:
morning nap around 10am for 30 min
    Afternoon nap around 1pm for 1 hour+
Then a late afternoon nap around 4:30 for 30 min
