No going to either. We will go straight to baby food when she's about 6-7 months.
Would you eat that shit? Not me! So I won't be giving it my baby.
I don't eat shit, but I do eat oatmeal.
Also, I think it's in bad taste to refer to any type of food as shit. I see you haven't participated on the board much, so perhaps you missed the post with the article about mothers who have to water down bottles of formula to feed their kids because it is too expensive for them. I bet they'd be happy to use cereal. Just because it's not something you choose to use doesn't mean it's shit.
We had our 4 month appointment Monday and the Dr. said no foods since he is on breastmilk until we talk again at 6 months..I'm going to look more into BLW because it sounds really neat and has a lot of benefits.
We just started to do a bit of oatmeal now and then - he just turned 5 months last week. He LOVES it - grabs for the spoon and cries when it's all gone. We only give him about a tablespoon or so. Once he turns 6 months we'll graduate to maybe a bit of purees with some avocado and bananas in there - kind of BLW but with a few purees.
ETA: We're just making stuff up as we go along, lol.
Apparently, in 2008 a young Florida mother was doing this because she could not afford formula and almost killed her baby. A lot of those news stories came up in the search.
I'm planning to start at 4 months old which will be in a week. I'll give him the cereal before bed and wake him for a dream feed when I go to bed. I did this with my other two boys. It was always their first solid. I'm not sure when I'll start veg purées. I'm interested in baby led weaning but I'm a little hesitant. Maybe I'll do a mixture, but I need to read about it more.
I've been reading about BLW and it seems like it can actually be counterproductive to try to use purees and do BLW. The reason I say this is because when babies are fed purees, they learn to suck food to the back of the throat and swallow, and I worry that if they did this with table foods they could choke. It seems like purees teach habits that interfere with BLW. @crunchymama11 maybe you could weigh in?
I will start purees between 4 and 6 months when he seems ready. I won't do rice but may do oatmeal. Around 6 or 7 months I will also do some BLW as well.

I has a similar question - if you are doing BLW and want to give your LO apple sauce, yogurt, oatmeal, etc. if that ok? Would you spoon feed it to them? I am half way through the BLW book and this hasn't been addressed.
What I remember from the book and crunchy's explanations is that you should either preload the spoon for them (and have them feed themselves) or give them something like toast sticks that they can hold and use to dip into the yogurt, hummus, applesauce, etc.
With BLW you don't put anything in their mouth. You let them do it. With purée they learn to swallow before they learn to chew. Which is fine until they have to chew.

Yep, that's my concern with the purees then BLW approach. I don't want my LO learning to suck food back and swallow it and then be giving her actual solid food that she needs to chew.
I used purées with my first at 6 mths and plan to do that with this LO. We already started cereal.
I did very little reading on BLW with my first and I think it's a great approach as well. It's also a fairly new approach, where as the purées approach has been working for a long time. Either way seems fine to me.

I've given dd some avocado off of my plate and she "chewed" it. I mashed it a little and then put it in her mouth. DH lets her suck on halo oranges. I've also given her oatmeal a few times. I'm not forcing it, but if she's interested in what we're eating, I'll let her try it.
With my first, we did a little rice cereal and/or oatmeal mixed with breast milk starting at 4 months, and then purees starting with avocado and banana shortly after. No BLW for us, and she's now a totally normal 3 year old who can chew and swallow fine, so there you go...
We'll be waiting till 6 months or so with this one, just because she's doing really, really well with bm only and I don't see a need to rush it. She's still tongue thrusting big time so she's not showing signs of being ready either. And we'll probably just start with avocados and bananas, since we are waiting anyway.
We are going to talk to the doc about food at her 4 mo appt tomorrow. I made some puréed food and have it ready for her. I have the organic brown rice and organic oatmeal that Gerber makes. We will follow her lead I guess. #wingingit

Actually I have participated quite a bit and yes I must have missed that article because I couldn't find it. Just because I said that rice cereal tastes like shit doesn't mean I am putting down anyone who can't afford to feed their kid. You must have read that wrong. It is sad and I do feel very bad for those parents. It has no taste and no nutritional value. That's why I won't be feeding it to her because I have that choice. There is assistance out there to help mothers who need it.

BLW isn't fairly new..it's what was done before blenders were invented.
I am interested in BLW, too, but I don't understand why everyone is so against oatmeal especially. Adults are encouraged to eat oatmeal because it's good for you, so I don't see why babies might not also eat it.
I've read that most of those cereals (rice and oatmeal) are iron-fortified and that is why pediatricians usually recommend it.... is that a legit concern? I know most veggies have iron, but not as much.
The "problem" with oatmeal cereals is that the process to create the flakes removes a lot of the key nutrients in the oatmeal. If you make your own and just blend the oatmeal it would be much more nutritious.
S is getting better with the spoon every day. No rice. We are doing oatmeal, about 1-2TB a day. Tonight when I put him in the highchair, he was so excited. I'm guessing that he likes the experience and hanging out with the rest of us while we eat dinner.
Okay peeps. Let's clear something up. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing purées. It's personal choice. BLW is not intrinsically better. We are doing BLW because I think it's easier and don't want to mess with purées. To me BLW is not some new-fangled trend. It's just old school. It's what people did before blenders. Lol.
However, if you start purées and get baby used to them, you probably should not just switch to BLW just because. You will need to wait until baby is older to give them non-blended food. But honestly, what's the point? Why start with one and switch? Just pick whichever you feel works best for you and stick to it.
Eventually they will all eat the same stuff. BLW babies can and will eat purées (DD1 still loves her apple sauce pouches) and purée babies will eventually feed themselves non-blended food. They will all get there. They just may take slightly different paths.
I offered purees initially and once her pincer grasp was more developed I offered soft cooked veggies, then puffs/cheerios. It's what worked for us. DD was about 5.5 months old when we started solids. DS will most likely be around 6 months before we start, too. I need to start planning purees and freeing up freezer space soon!!
LO is 5 weeks today. I've tried the rice cereal with him and he hated it, so I stopped. I'll be moving onto puréed veggies next week to see if he likes those any better. I usually do a mix of baby food and blw. For now he's content with his formula, so I'm in no real big hurry.

I should have used the word Popular, BLW has become more popular.
Either way, purées are fine.
