Update on working PT

Well I was told they can't make a part-time position for me.  I'm about 80% sure I want to pursue the substitute teaching but will think about it.  There was a gal or two that said they did this for a living.  How does that work for you- how often do you get called?  I just had a couple of questions to those gals if they are willing to share with me.  I'm disappointed but not surprised.

  • Aww man, Sorry they told you no. What kind of work do you do? I used to sub a lot and it could definitely work out for you. I was called a lot and loved that I could say yes or no depending on the day. Good luck!

  • I subbed a lot in grad school. What usually happens is you can become a teacher's favorite or get on a school's preferred sub list. That way you're at the same one or two schools for the most part--which makes it a lot easier since every school can have different procedures. I liked getting subs who my kids already knew, and who already knew the procedures for dismissal, lunch, etc.

  • That sucks, I'm sorry :(  My SO's sister does it for a living.  I'm not sure why because she has a degree in something else, but quit when she had her kids.  They're all in the school she subs at now so I think she likes being close to them.
  • @mainerocks I do!  I've talked to her about it and she said she takes drop ins and would be completely fine with me telling her that morning.  I've asked twice now to double check.

  • @fieldpetal I emailed our principal (hometown school) and he said he would defintely call me to sub.  We live in a really small town and I know the elementary/high school principals and I really don't think I'd have a problem getting called especially after a while.  I'm just nervous bc I've always had a paycheck and the unknown can be scary.

Did you sub hs/elem?  As far as work- does the teacher leave you stuff to teach or what do you actually do?  I remember having movie days in high school when we had a sub.  I feel like or wish I could do one day so I could get a feel.  I almost was an education major and I'm not sure why I changed but wish I wouldn't have bc I'd love to be a teacher.

  • @kaylakim I work in a loan department at a small bank.  I have a business degree but have wished since I graduated I would have done teaching.  I honestly feel like I would enjoy it but I have never done it so I don't know what to expect.

  • I used to sub a lot. Elementary, I was always expected to teach. High school was more crowd control while watching a movie or doing a study guide. The high schoolers often did not have any respect for subs, which made it difficult at times.

I subbed mostly kinder to 3rd. The only time I didn't have sub plans from the teacher was when it was an emergency, and then her team would get me stuff. I never left movies for my class when I had a sub because the kids really didn't want that. I'd leave a lot of books with questions, simple activities and review stuff. I had 5 and 6 year olds, who would get very attached to me, so I wanted things to be as easy as possible on the kids and the sub.

I think you'll be really good at this. The first few times are the hardest because of the unknown. You'll figure out some tricks to get the kids to listen, etc. You can search for sub tips on pinterest. too.

  • Thanks ladies!  I'm having a hard time deciding 100% just because I've always worked and had a paycheck.  I want to be home with LO part-time and I feel like this is the best way.  I'll will figure it out soon!  Really appreciate the feedback!
