Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Gas?

My LO is 5 weeks now and has been so fussy lately. Mainly after feedings. Normally I will feed her and she will either fall asleep or just be a happy baby. Is this just a "fussy stage" or should I treat her for gas problems? I sit her upright after ever feeding and burp her but that doesn't seem to help. Is there any home remedies or over the counter drops I should give her or should I consult her pedi first?

And let me just say... As a first time mom I am so thankful for The Bump! You ladies have been more helpful than you know :)

Re: Gas?

  • I had the same thing happen around the same time with my LO. She had such a hard time burping and seemed full of gas. I tried gripe water and that really seemed to help, then saw our pedi, who said it was likely reflux and difficulty burping. She put her on Zantac, which has worked wonders. Your LO also is likely heading into her first wonder week. If you haven't already, you should check out the book The Wonder Weeks--my SIL turned me onto it and I've found it so helpful!).

  • I'd try some gas drops. They are natural and my pedi said if it turns out not to be gas, the gas drops won't hurt. in other words, might as well try it!
  • I switched bottles to Doctor Browns which helped my LO a lot . Also used gas drops and did bicycle kicks to help with the gas.
  • Gas drops are not natural. They have some meds in them, it is on the bottle. My baby has horrible gas, and nothing really helped. The pedi said she will outgrow it soon. Good luck!

I tried every gas drop and grape water on the market and they did not work. She also changed formulas and she is on meds. Nothing is helping. Just time!

  • Gas drops are made from Simethicone which is an anti foaming agent that breaks the surface tension of small bubbles causing them to create a large bubble that is more easily passed in one direction or the other. It's the same thing that adults take in the form of Gas-X.

The scary part is it is also used as a non foaming agent in many industrial applications such as non foaming detergents, industrial fluids and lubricants and many other things, but it is harmless to ingest for humans.

At 5 weeks gas and bloating are somewhat normal. If you are able to burp her well during and after feeding and she is still fussy, I would not hesitate to try a little. Also slow flow nipples tend to help a lot also.

We have to give ours gas drops and he burps like a trucker during and after feedings even with slow flow nipples. We just bypassed giving them to him by themselves. We add 4-5 drops into his bottle when we mix his formula and it removes any bubbles from the formula in the bottle. This helped a lot. It's rare that we ever have to give them to him between feedings.

  • I'm sorry, you're right. DD doesn't typically have gas and what we have is gripe water, not gas drops (I just call them gas drops so DH knows what the heck i'm talking about). sorry for my misinformation!
Like I said, DD hasn't had much gas problems except when she was about 1-2 months old. Before using the gripe water we would try gentle baby massage, moving her knees up toward her chest and gently rubbing her tummy with our hands. Sometimes it seemed to help, other times it didn't. GL!
