Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ 2/10
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Good! I've eaten a little soy oil/lecithin here and there over the last couple weeks and haven't noticed any symptoms in DS. I'm waiting until he's off antibiotics to give him soy directly.
2. If you avoid soy, do you avoid soy oil and soy lecithin? I have had to avoid all soy. My DS was super sensitive.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I just wanted to share that I think we are reaching a turning point. W's face has been much clearer for a few weeks now. We are still giving him the zyrtec every night, and he is eating a lot more of the foods that used to make his skin flare up. It is just such a relief to see smooth baby cheeks!
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? I am okay. I have been egg free since last Wednesday. We had a good few days, and then Saturday blood in the stool again. It is driving me crazy. I am really looking forward to my appt friday with the specialist. Also I made a delicious dessert this weekend for friends, and the left over is in my fridge. Every time I open the door I want to eat it. I haven't felt like this since I stopped eating dairy. I have sort of been like "oh yeah that would be good, but whatever." This is like EAT ME!!!
2. If you avoid soy, do you avoid soy oil and soy lecithin? I did at first with DD1 for the initial period of elimination, and then added it right back in without a problem. This time around I wasn't mindful of it it until we talked about it here last week.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? 1) I got cheesecake factory take out this weekend with friends, and I spoke directly to the girl on the phone when ordering about all the allergies. I ordered a salad, but told her to tell the chef to make any kind of modification needed and to give me whatever salad dressing was dairy/soy/wheat/egg free ...I would eat whatever. Well the salad came back, and it looked amazing. I only noticed one missing item. My husband had picked up the phone, and he said the girl went over the allergies when he picked up the order. I was still really skeptical. Everyone thought I was crazy so I ate it. Immediately after eating it I started getting nervous that I ate something I should not have. Does anyone else feel like this? I feel like I am getting so paranoid.
Also---at DDs last appt which was less than two weeks ago I asked about her face. I thought it might be baby acne or eczema. The pedi said it was baby acne, and it was fine. I called Friday because it is all over her cheeks, eye lids, neck and head. The nurse said that was typical of baby acne. I REALLY think it is eczema. She keeps rubbing her little face on my chest when I wear her as if it were itchy. I don't think they would do anything though for her though right? She is only 6.5 weeks old. Has anyone got any ointment or anything for their baby's eczema. I have some for DD2, but we didn't start using that until she was over 1.
@camedowncrushing Get that dessert out of your fridge! Sometimes I have to hide things DH brings home so I don't feel that annoying temptation. Make it easier on yourself!
Paranoia is a common symptom among MSPI moms.
I used to feel that way all the time, any time we ate out. So, we stopped eating out except for rare occassions. It just wasn't worth the mental distress to me.
Do you have a photo of your DD's rash? I don't know if they could prescribe anything for an infant, but maybe there's something safe you could use. What about switching laundry detergent? I bet if you get the right foods eliminated from your diet it will help also. She might also just be rubbing her face because you smell like delicious milk.
I could hardly snuggle DS when he was that little without him wanting to nurse. My nephew was the same way with his mama, and when I held him the first time he started rooting and got really annoyed that I wasn't nursing him.
I had a couple of restaurants I felt great about when DD1 had just dairy/soy. Salads were so easy, and I would bring my own dressing places. Ha ha ha. The wheat thing is really scaring me because it is so new.
I will take a photo when she wakes. It could be just her rubbing her face on me for milk. I know....I am just probably paranoid!
2. If you avoid soy, do you avoid soy oil and soy lecithin? Those are both fine for DS and so is soy flour. It is just the soy protein that bothers him. And now I can have soy milk without it bothering him (but he gets a rash with any direct soy protein).
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Not today.
@Rocknrollfriend that is so great to gear that your DS is doing so well!
@Charlie1178 That restaurant sounds awesome!
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
We're doing well, I think. I'm finding ways to add calories to slow down my weight loss (something I never imagined I'd say before BFing).
I also decided to go ahead and eliminate wheat for a while, since DS is still having green mucusy poop. I haven't noticed a difference yet, but I just cut it out last Wednesday, so I'm still hopeful.
2. If you avoid soy, do you avoid soy oil and soy lecithin?
I do. DS was still having minor rashes until I cut them out. At this point, I'm even avoiding things that say "processed in a facility that processes...insertallergenhere," and I'll start being a little more flexible when he's 100% symptom free.
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
Do other allergens stay in your/LO's system as long as milk and soy? Am I looking at four or five weeks per allergen? I'm starting to feel like he'll be a year old before I even figure what else is causing issues.
brideinsummer04 It is good to know that I am probably justified in my crazy anxiety over eating out!
@Charlie1178
That restaurant does sound amazing!
DS has had some crazy virus for almost 2 wks. He gets worse, we take him to the doctor, they say "it's a virus, give him more Tylenol and bring him back if he gets worse." And so the cycle starts over again.
But the milk intolerance stuff is going fine...
To answer the Q re: soy - we haven't eliminated that so I don't have any experience.
@camedowncrushing Gosh, that looks a little more angry than baby acne to me. Did the pedi actually see it, or did you just talk about it over the phone? Does it flare up and then subside? It might be worth asking for a referral to a dermatologist or pedi allergist. Have you asked for opinions on the Food Allergy board?
@lovelainie I do think it takes a few weeks for whatever to get out of your system. The pedi GE gave me a month to eliminate wheat. It took us until he was 7 mo to figure everything out (partly because I kept messing up with the dairy and then soy elimination).
@JarynA Ugh, it's the worst when little babies are sick and you can't do anything for them. What are his symptoms?
Tylenol seems to help a lot, except last night. I have no idea what was wrong last night.
1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
Still doing pretty good here, mostly normal poops for about a week. I plan to wait another week or so then try adding peanut butter back in to see if it was just a coincidence or if DD has a peanut intolerance.
2. If you avoid soy, do you avoid soy oil and soy lecithin?
This was actually going to be my question this week! I have not eliminated either, but have gone back and forth on whether or not I should. I think that *maybe* when I eat a lot of soy oil that it causes gassiness. For example, we had Chipotle on Saturday, and they use soy oil there. DD was pretty gassy that night and there were no other changes to my diet that day so I think it must be the Chipotle. But her poops were normal and she was only gassy that evening, so I'm not sure if I just need to avoid large quantities?
3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
Nothing else
@amichelle723 Chipotle should not be using soy bean oil unless you get the soft tortillas...at least around here they comply with this list. It is one of the few safe places I eat! They are really great about allergies.

@beckyj2013 My LO didn't have classic excema, but he did start getting a rashy face and bum when I started giving him solids that didn't agree with him. Before that he'd occassionally get diaper rash but it didn't really seem to be tied to my diet.
I found it very difficult to eat out when I was avoiding everything (dairy, soy, eggs, peanuts, wheat, coconut, cabbage). Are you in California? In N Out was our go-to road trip stop. I'd get a burger wrapped in lettuce, and the fries are totally safe. Chipotle is also a good option as PP mentioned. Aside from those places, I would just examine the menu for items I thought might be safe, then ask a ton of questions and request substitutions if necessary.
