Red cell antigens "Fya (aka Duffy) and Jka (aka Kidd)"...

I had a severe postpartum hemorrhage when I gave birth to my son which resulted in a blood transfusion.  Prior to this I had no issues with my blood and was compatible with all A+ units.  However, as a result of the transfusion, I have developed red cell antigens "Fya (aka Duffy) and Jka (aka Kidd)", which for the baby they will essentially treat as Rh negative.  But, it is expected that only approximately 8% of units are will be compatible.  I'm just curious if anyone else on the board has anything similar and what their experiences have been.  Right now they are just monitoring my levels to make sure my levels don't increase.

  • No experience here. Can you give your own blood ahead of time for them to store in case you need another transfusion?

  • I have A- with a +Duffy coating. All of the females in my family do. Nbd just need to pay attention when they're testing for type because it will occasionally test positive. (Not if they did the super tests, but if a blood bus did a quick test it might) DD came out with the same but hers is a stronger positive so they freaked and gave me a Rhogam shot just in case. Pedi said just tell people she's A- and it'll be fine. Interesting that yours happened as a result of the transfusion. Shouldn't be an issue as long as it's in your records to get negative blood and watch for LO's blood type.

  • ajsweeton, I live in Portland, OR and the hospital I go to is the only teaching hospital in the state so it's pretty big.  My chart has admission notes to do a T & C as soon as I'm admitted and to have two units of blood waiting just in case.  When I asked my doctor if I should be wearing a medical bracelet she said no, if I got into a trauma they would just use O negative on me because that's what they do in traumas when they don't have time to do a T&C.  She said there may be issues with that still though.  I asked her if my parents could bank blood for me and she said they would likely not be a match because this is from the transfusion instead of something I was born with.  It's just so weird and shitty, I really got handed the shitty stick with my last transfusion :(  Thanks for your insight though, its really helpful :)

MeredithElese my blood type is actually A + so the doc is only thinking I'll need Rhogam if the antibody titers start increasing in number.  It's totally weird and shitty I got it from a transfusion.  I wish I had known that this would have been a possibility, not that I could have refused it, my hematocrit was critically low, but it just would have been nice to know it was a possibility :(
