Valentines

edited February 2014 in Stay at Home Moms
This is DS's first Valentine's day in school. I took him to target, he picked out a box and signed his name to all of the . The party is tomorrow and suddenly my newsfeed is full of Pinterest-y projects with printed labels, put together treats or cute little bags that clearly were done by the moms. Not even a hand written name from the kids. Now I feel lame but at least DS's Valentines are from HIM and not me. Right??

Re: Valentines

  • Eh. Do whatever you want and don't feel bad. DD helped make her homemade pinteresty Valentines and tried to write names on the back of the tag so it is not like she didn't do any work.

  • Please don't feel lame.  Social media (and especially Pinterest) are really good about making us feel this way. And I love Pinterest. But it's true.  You have all these mothers trying to compete for that perfect way and look for everything.. pffft.   We did store bought, FTR. And DD signed them all.  It's what she wanted, and I was happy she did.  Ain't no one got time for homemade Valentine's when I have to spend 2 hours in the kitchen baking homemade cookies for the party.

....... which might all be canceled if we get a snow day.  Then I imagine those moms in DD's class who made them will be way more pissed than I. (I'll have a crying kid, but that's besides the point).

I did the cute Pinterest'y clementine "cutie" Valentine for Hadley's class (also cancelled for snow) but I don't know what I'll do when she's old enough to want to pick her own out.
Mine absolutely did NOT want homemade. I even showed her a few!  "Nope. I want the one I see in stores".. :::shrugs::: I feel like when they're old enough to decide, they should.  It's their valentines, class and friends. That's just me, though. She was insistent on the fun dip ones she saw "my friends will love these!" so I got 'em.

  • My kids chose boxed Valentines. Dora, My Little Pony and Cars. I taped a treat on them. I did make my 5 year old sign each one. That was a chore! Don't feel lame! My kids wanted to pick out their own!

Having him sign his name was an insanely stupid idea. Anyone want to guess how long it takes a 4 year old to write his name (which is only 4 letters) on 25 valentines??

I will likely let her get store bought ones if that's what she really wants... but I'd probably be lying if I said I might try to nudge her to homemade first.
Better you than me :P  I'm notttttt crafty, though, so that sounds miserable to me.  People who are crafty probably have an easier time with those and enjoy them.  Mine would look like a hot mess.  Thankfully my area seems not into Pinterest.  We've TRULY never had a homemade Valentine in the two years she's been in school... so we'd look odd doing one, I think.

  • I'm crafty and I love doing homemade things. But I guess my hang up is if I find an idea and do 95% of the work, how is it from him? I might as well sign my own nam e

  • I love homemade valentines and crafts but I also think there's something really fun about going to the store and picking out a box of special valentines. I let DD pick out some valentines this year to give her cousins and friends at church. I tried to steer her towards the fun dip ones (because DH and I love fundip haha) but she insisted on the Disney Princess ones.

  • If my kid was too young to pick something out, write names, etc. I might make something homemade and cutesy. Once my kid is interested in choosing the cards, and is able to write the names out, however, I'd go with the kind they want and have them do the name-writing. I wouldn't feel obliged to do a cutesy craft-like valentine thing.

I don't see how my daughter's are any less from her than your child's are. My daughter didn't make the card/tag, neither did yours. They both picked their theme, decorated the card/tag as they wished, stuffed an envelope/bag, and tried to write a name.

  • Dd picked out a box at the store, stuck a sticker to each of her cards and scribbled on each of them. I wrote her name. I thought about the cutie idea hav shared, but in the end I was too tired. I would have still made her do a sticker and scribble.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • We make craft ones every year because that's what the kids like to do. Obviously my younger two (3,1) didn't write theirs (they colored on the backs) but my oldest wrote all of his and they all filled their bags with bubbles and the older two used the hole puncher for theirs and helped cut the strings.

The younger kids had their parties today and there were more homemade/ pinteresty ones than not. This is the first year that I've noticed it being that way though.

  • DS wanted store bought. He wrote his name and his friends names on them. DD wanted to make small bags so we did and attached a tag that she signed her name on. I don't think it matters if they are homemade or not if it's what your child wants to do.

  • I am right there with you. We bought Valentines at the store for both boys. DS1 chose Skylanders and addressed them all and DS2 chose fruit by the foot ones. I have to address those and I even let me 3 year old give candy. I wish I felt bad about taking the lazy sugary way, but I just can't.

How is that any different than a store doing 99% of the work and you having him sign it? It's no less "from him" if you let him pick out a homemade one to do, he could sign his name and help assemble it?

I don't care how people do them, but I don't see how one that comes from Pinterest that the mom does most of the work for is any less "from him" than him writing his name on something from the store.

If the kid looked at all the stuff on Pinterest and chose the one they wanted to do and helped, then yes, they're from the kid. I guarantee you that the ones I'm talking about had no child involvement. So in that case, yes the cars ones that DS selected and signed his name to are more from him in my eyes.
