Design question

I have an arched window like the one below. I have curtains that go down to the floor and really are too long because I don't know how to hem and I don't have a sewing machine. I want to get new curtains and avoid hemming. I don't want to cover the top arch, but start at the horizontal edge of the window. Should I hang the rod a few inches above the horizontal edge and have the curtains go to the floor, or hang the rod right at the edge, but have them only go down to the bottom of the window instead of the floor? There is a chest in front of the window that is as high as the bottom of the window, and I almost always keep the curtains closed.

I personally like floor length curtains that skim the floor. With the arch at the top I would hang the rod so it is flush with the top of the window sill and the curtains hang from there. If the puddle a tiny bit at the floor it's not always the worst thing (so long as they aren't really stiff curtains)
My problem  with the overhang is that the dogs step on it when they are trying to look and bark out the window. They bent the curtain rod. We got a stronger curtain rod, but I still don't want them stepping on the curtains.

  • Have you thought about using hem tape? Just need an iron. The stuff that comes with the IKEA curtains (also sold separate) is the best!

This is what we did in the twins' room (sorry bad pic), but our arch isn't as big. We used blinds to block out more light. I ditto the suggestion to use hem tape, it's what I used and super easy.

ETA: we used clips in case they stepped on it or pulled it, only the curtain would come down and not the whole rod.
