Flu

Has anyone had the flu while pregnant? What did you do and how long did it last?

I've been up all night vomiting. I called the OB but haven't heard back.

  • You should call your GP and see if you can get tested to ensure what you have is the flu and not a stomach virus.  I believe the strain of the flu that is going around this year is actually a lot less stomach/GI and a more of an upper respiratory disease.

There is also a big breakout in NoroVirus right now.  Which is very GI based.  If this is what you have the good news is it is said to be very short lived and you are completely miserable for less than 24 hours.

Your biggest risk is dehydration so make sure you are drinking liquids (not straight water).  Pedialyte would be a good choice, or some Gatorade.  Don't take big sips just small mouthfuls every 5 minutes.

  • If you really think its the flu - go in and get checked out. You don't have to go to your ob. Do you have a regular PCP/GP?

  • I had a stomach virus as well. Ended up in the hospital for 2 bags of IV fluid and 8mg of IV Zofran. However, if you legit have the flu, get checked out ASAP and start taking Tamiflu. Rest up and feel better either way, mama!

  • Same as pp. I couldn't keep anything down for 3 days. Finally got fluids and some Zofran and I was able to keep liquids down. Hope you feel better!

  • I have no advice or anything- just wanted to say hope you feel better!
  • The flu (influenza) is a respiratory infection, not a gastrointestinal infection.

DS and I had a GI bug last week, most likely norovirus. Vomiting only, not diarrhea. I lost 7 lbs (a gallon) of fluids over the course of 18 hours, my bump deflated, and the baby stopped moving for an entire day. I managed to stay out of the hospital, but I was given Phenergan suppositories and had to stay on a clear-liquid-only diet for 36 hours and regain all 7 lbs of fluid within 48, or I would've been ordered to go to L&D for IV fluids.

You should call your OB. S/he'll have specific instructions for you. Some will prescribe antinausea medications right away, just to be safe.

  • Thanks everyone. OB suggested coconut water and I trying but it's hard to keep it down. Praying my son doesn't get it.

  • Echoing other pp's...true influenza is a respiratory illness. It sounds like you have a GI bug. Feel.better soon!

  • I had the same thing on Sunday. Started Saturday night, next day I was miserable. It didn't make me vomit tho... Out the other end with severe GI pain. Could barely eat anything all day.

Stay hydrated at much as possible. Fruit punch Gatorade is my go-to for nausea (illness, MS, or hangovers). Maybe try some of that?

The next day I was past the stomach part of it and just had bad body aches and a headache. Get plenty of rest , maybe try drinking some warm chicken broth. HTH.

  • I just had the stomach bug a couple weeks ago and ended up calling the doctor because I couldn't keep water down. They had me to come in and get fluids since I was already dehydrated from the other fun part of the stomach bug. Mine started as bathroom trouble then it went into throwing up. It lasted a week. Try to stay hydrated if you can like the others said because the IV was not fun!
