Guys, you know what's worse than PT?

Taking away the Paci. Ugh... Hell, pure hell for everyone involved.

We should've taken away the Paci a looong time ago, but we didn't and DD is ATTACHED. She has a new baby cousin that she got to meet yesterday. We've been talking about this with her for months. I took her to the store yesterday, she picked out a special gift bag to put her Pacis in for the new baby. She got to pick out a big girl lovey and special treats for the morning after no Paci. She was pumped she wrapped the Pacis and gave them to that sweet baby. We all clapped and cheered. Then bedtime came.... She was so so so sad. She never asked for a Paci but she just kept crying. We tried stories, tv, cuddles, rocking, snacks, bribes , CIO and by midnight she tantrumed so hard that she cracked her head on the floor and then almost threw up from crying so hard. Keep in mind she woke up DS numerous times, who happens to be teething and sleeping like shit anyway. Finally I gave in, I gave her one of DS's Pacis. She immediately calmed down and crashed. I just could not take anymore, it was heartbreaking. Now she is supposed to be napping and isn't because she can't without her Paci. Which only means she'll be that much grumpier at bedtime.
I am at a loss... Anyone, thoughts or suggestions or experiences!?!!?

After this is over I'm taking DS's Pacis, I'm not going to take away a two year olds Paci ever again....

  • Awwww, poor thing.  That sounds awful for all of you.  Hope things get better soon!

At 8 months, I'm already eyeballing DD2's paci and wondering how long we'll let her go with it.  DD1 is a thumb sucker, and it makes me nuts when we're out at a play date and she's standing around sucking her thumb.

  • Thanks guys. She fell asleep at the dinner table. Poor kid. I'm rocking her as she is screaming right now... Hopefully she adjusts soon.

What about getting a special toy for nap/night time. Let her use bith the toy Nd paci inly at night for a month or so, then take the paci away? That way she still has something she can use to sooth herself to sleep? Lily uses a stuffed monkey.

Or maybe make ur own "wub-a-nub" paci. Attach a small beanie.baby to a paci. Let her use it for a month, then take the paci away?

Eta but leave the beanie baby.

    Lolinshag, those a great ideas.
Thankfully, hopefully, I think we are through the worst (knock on wood). She did the possessed crying and screaming for like a half hour while I rocked her and half held her down and then she miraculously calmed down. After a half hour more of rocking she asked to get into bed. And..... She slept like NORMAL!!!! Woke up to go potty and went back to bed with no fuss. She got a hello kitty bracket as a prize this morning when she woke up and exclaimed "I did it"! Soooooo relieved, hoping for similar success at nap time and bed tonight....

  • I am trying to ditch the paci with DS, too. I bought some Difrax pacis that are solid, and he keeps them as part of his collection (ha), but doesn't use them. He fell asleep without the regular paci last night, but woke up bawling and I gave it back to him. I started a sticker chart this morning for going to sleep without the paci, but that wasn't good enough and he cried and cried for it tonight. Like, he doesn't form that many complete sentences, but he clearly cried, "mommy, I need my night-nights now!" (He calls the paci a night-night.) I went in and reminded him he wouldn't get a treat/sticker if I gave them to him, but he wanted them...and fell asleep immediately.

Sigh...I don't know what to do.

  • @ladybugpjb - it has been an awful transition for us. I have never seen DD so upset. However after the first night (the worst night), she didn't nap the next day, she then crashed at like 6. She woke up to freak out around 8, after about 30 min of crying she settled down and hasn't cried since. She is still having a hard time adjusting to falling asleep without her Paci.
In the midst of the initial take away, DH googled it, the exact scenario seems to play out with others ranging from a few days to a week of crying and freaking out. Everyone says their schedules for naps and bedtime got really off but to be strong and it'll eventually work.
I completely understand how you feel, just a few days ago I was terrified it wouldn't end and DD wouldn't get over it but it has already improved tremendously here!!! Hang in there mama, hopefully we'll be past this transition in no time!
