Car gas mileage range and other dumb questions

We just got a new car, and it tells you how many miles you have left before you run out of gas. I let it get down to 5 the other day because I wanted to get home and fill it up at the same gas station where I always go, but DH thinks I shouldn't let it get that low. WDYT? It's a Toyota Highlander, if that makes a difference. DH just says that it says that the gauge isn't 100% accurate, and he'd rather me not chance running out of gas with DS in the car.

Are you a more careful driver now that you have more than just you riding in the car? I used to speed a lot more and also used to be a lot more distracted while driving, but I'm trying to get better.

Re: Car gas mileage range and other dumb questions

  • That's good to know. I guess I could read the manual. I had a Honda Accord before and knew I could go about 60 miles after the gas light came on. I would usually procrastinate because I wanted to make it home or make it to a cheaper gas station.

  • there's probably about 2-3 gallons if the interwebz is correct.

  • there is absolutely a buffer built in and sometimes it's even a few gallons.
However on lots of new cars, the fuel systems are highly pressurized to increase efficiency and performance so the lower you allow it to go, to more stress you will put on the fuel system.    A fuel pump failure on some cars means bye bye engine.

Also if you run out of fuel, the car will most likely need to be towed to the dealership and the fuel injection system will have to be bled before it will run again - and it wont be cheap

  • I ran out once before, and it was a long time ago. I was on an exit ramp, so I walked to a gas station, and then a cop saw me walking (it was late at night) and gave me a ride back to my car. I tried to get in the front of his cop car, but apparently that's not allowed, so I had to ride in the back with the bars in between us.

But...I probably wouldn't want to repeat that experience with a 14-month-old, and what @Ratpasta said sounds pretty sucky, so I'll probably fill it up when it gets under 10.
  • I have no idea about the truth of this, but my DH doesn't like the gas to get too low when it is really cold out. Nothing to do with running out of gas, but something to do with the car starting or the engine. Or something like that. I am not knowledgable about cars.

It might have something to do with moisture accumulation in the tank and freezing, ESPECIALLY if you run that crap with corn in it, which you might..... I dont live in a place where it snows so I have the luxury of not having to think about things like that but it stands to reason.

yeah when we bought our car, we knew that specifically with the Passat Diesel it's bad to run it even in the red on the gauge.
But I married a girl that prefers a manual transmission and cares about our car, so dont need to worry about her...or the car

  • I drive way past when I should...my truck goes from a certain number of miles to just low. I get to low a lot.
