  • My mom EBF me and never gave a bottle. Her mom was anti-BF, but she did it anyway. I was the oldest, born in 1980, and my mom was older (30+). It sounds like many of you were formula fed, so I'm just wondering what was most common.

  • I was EBF, and when he doctor made her stop BFing at 10 months because she was pregnant again she had enough milk in the freezer to last for several more months. My older sisters (older by a few years) were exclusively FF, because that's what people did.

  • I was EBF and bf till almost 24 mo. My dear mama. I vaguely remember playing with a mole on her neck. She was a rarity @ the time (late 70s).

She EBF until she went back to work at 3 months and then needed to supplement.

  • @ken&;kendra, that's so sweet.
My mom said she was too modest to breastfeed.  My siblings and I were all formula fed.

She is completely against extended breastfeeding.  I sent her the Kellymom info sheet on it and she wasn't impressed, but said she'd stop saying things about it.  Apparently when I was small they had a friend that breasted a four year old, and she didn't like it.

She was also pretty unsupportive during all of the trouble I had at the beginning, and told me to just let myself dry up several times.
    @LadyBlue07 - ouch :( I'm sorry.

My mom EBF most of us for a while, though I'm not sure how long. I know she supplemented formula for some of my brothers, especially the younger ones. She's been a great help and support with BFing. Two of my sisters EBF'd their kids and they were really helpful.

  • I was adopted.  For the longest time ('til I was married I think) I thought this was why I was formula fed.  I didn't realize things could've been done so she could've bfed me.  O well.

  • I was born in South Africa in the late '70s. They weren't known to be very progressive. Babies were put into a nursery, and only brought in to feed on a schedule. That messes with the whole 'on demand' feeding thing, so her milk never really came in. My older brother and I were Pepsi babies.  My sister who was born in Canada was EBF for 6mo, but my mom had trouble establishing supply because she kept trying to keep a FF schedule.

We were all put on cow's milk at 6mo.

  • My mom was only BF herself to six weeks and then switched to Carnation powdered milk cause by grandma couldn't afford formula. And then at 6 mo grandma switched her to skim milk cause she thought she was fat.
Yowza! Sounds like something my g-ma would say.

  • My mom breastfed my three brothers (one older, two younger) and I all for one year. She probably would have gone longer, but just went off of the recommendation of one year. My older brother and I are 15 months apart, so she was BFing him while pregnant with me. She is very supportive of BFing. My mom is seriously awesome.

Ugh. So sorry. My gramma told us we were fat, did "size shaming" and such. My thin cousins were glorified. Bleh. What was WITH that generation?
  • I was BF. My mom pretty much thinks formula is the Devils milk.

Yeah....my mom is kind of an ass.

  • Both. I was breastfed until my mom's milk dried up. Then I became a Pepsi child. As much as she could make me. Milk of any kind was the last thing on my mind after I started eating solids and my mom really struggled with getting me to nurse (hence the drying up) let alone take a bottle of formula.

What can I say? Love me some food.

  • My mom tried but I see said her breast bled not the little blood you get from chapped nipple. She said it also made me ill l so just went to formula. She was very happy I never had any problems with breastfeeding my kids.

  • My mom was in the minority of her friend circle... FF was like a vogue in those days :P almost all my friends were FF

  • I come from a family of BF. my grandma was too poor for formula for her 12 kids. With as large of a family as we have, there is always a baby at family functions and seeing one of us BF is pretty much a given.

My mom switched us all over to WCM at nine months when she stopped BF us. Not sure why she stopped at 9 months or why she went directly to WCM, though.

  • my brothers and I were all BF. Not exactly sure how long. I think my  mom wanted to go a year, but got pregnant with me when my brother was 7ish months old and he started to refuse. I think the rest of us went longer.

My grandma had to formula feed all of her kids. She says her milk never came in. She told me this every time she saw me feeding DS for about the first 4-5 months of his life. She is 93 so I think part of it is she forgot she told me, but I also think she feels really guilty about not being able to BF. It makes me sad because her youngest kid is 54 and everyone is healthy and happy. The formula didn't do any damage.

  • I was BF until I was 3.5 years old and plied off with a crow bar! (Joking about the crow bar part btw!) I know I moved onto cow's milk in a bottle till 4.5 years (which I remember.) I had a lot of separation anxiety and the bottle gave me comfort. :)
  • I think she EBF'ed, but she may have supplemented. I'm not about to call her up to ask her cuz this is how I feel about her: :-q

  • My brother and I were FF. Mom wanted to BF so bad but couldn't due to anti -seizure meds she was on because of a brain tumor she had. She even took a course about BF. She knew she couldn't but she wanted to learn more

  • My siblings and I were FF from Day 1. She said she didn't want her boobs to sag.

So imagine my surprise when she said I gave up too easy with trying to EBF. Really, Mom, really??

  • My mom EBF'd me until about 12 weeks.  Then she got an infection and it hurt too much to keep doing so.  She remarks today about how much support is out there for breastfeeding moms, and how she wishes it was around when she was trying.  She would have kept going if she knew how to deal with it, that she wasn't alone, it was normal, etc. She said she cried and cried when her milk dried up because she wanted to keep feeding me :(

As a result, she is extremely supportive of me and I am so thankful for her :)
