Daycare

I'm heading to a daycare on Thursday for a tour and I am making a list of questions to ask the providers, what are some of your suggestions to ask.
Some background I already know, their sick policy, its a weekly rate and I bring diapers, wipes and formula. They provide food/snacks. Its a 1:4 ratio. Children must be vaccinated.

I personally find it's less about the questions and more about your gut reaction.  There will obviously be a few exceptions but generally a licensed daycare will have roughly the same procedures and policies as another.  You could ask about their teacher turnover and their outside play policy but at the end of the day, really take a good hard look around and envision your child there.
Such good advice. Thank you. I'm new to this and since LO is my 1st I just want to make sure I cover my basis.

  • Pay attention to how they handle crying babies in the room. You want them to give you their attention, but not at the expense of another baby.

  • Thought of another one...ask if they move the babies to the next room based on age or developmental milestone. Like, if your LO isn't walking by 1, will they still move them up?

And what are policies for milk after 1? Our DCP doesn't have a fridge in the 1 year old classroom so they discourage breastmilk after 1.

  • A lot is by feel and if you have any friends with kiddos I would get some inside opinions on different centers. We moved to a new state when LO was 1 month old and he started daycare when he was 10 weeks. I didn't know anyone here so I just found the highest star rated daycare in the area. Yes they were clean, and nice looking but I never once saw a teacher playing or interacting with the babies. Every time I went in there they were sitting in rocking chairs feeding a baby a bottle. I get that babies need to be fed but I also started to catch on that they were just feeding bottles so they could sit in the chairs because they were going through bottles like crazy and over feeding LO. A friend suggested her daycare to me which was a lower star rated place, in an old building so didn't have the "curb appeal" but we have been so happy with our change. Every time I walk into the new daycare a teacher is on the floor interacting with the babies. They also will rock my LO if he is super cranky or tired when the other place I walked in to get him numerous times and he was on the floor or in his crib screaming. The old daycare looked perfect on paper and they knew how to answer the all my questions but when it came to TLC... it wasn't there!
