We just got a new car, and it tells you how many miles you have left before you run out of gas. I let it get down to 5 the other day because I wanted to get home and fill it up at the same gas station where I always go, but DH thinks I shouldn't let it get that low. WDYT? It's a Toyota Highlander, if that makes a difference. DH just says that it says that the gauge isn't 100% accurate, and he'd rather me not chance running out of gas with DS in the car.
Are you a more careful driver now that you have more than just you riding in the car? I used to speed a lot more and also used to be a lot more distracted while driving, but I'm trying to get better.
Re: Car gas mileage range and other dumb questions
However on lots of new cars, the fuel systems are highly pressurized to increase efficiency and performance so the lower you allow it to go, to more stress you will put on the fuel system. A fuel pump failure on some cars means bye bye engine.
Also if you run out of fuel, the car will most likely need to be towed to the dealership and the fuel injection system will have to be bled before it will run again - and it wont be cheap
But...I probably wouldn't want to repeat that experience with a 14-month-old, and what @Ratpasta said sounds pretty sucky, so I'll probably fill it up when it gets under 10.
But I married a girl that prefers a manual transmission and cares about our car, so dont need to worry about her...or the car
