Let's talk about burping.

How long is a burp session? How often? What positions works best for you? How hard do you pat his/her back? When do you feel satisfied that you're 'done'?

My DS has entered into a fussier stage and it's clear he has gas and needs to fart. I wish I could have relieved the air bubble before it headed south. I believe I'm burping successfully but come afternoon, he's red faced and pushing out farts. I'd love to hear more about what you're doing! TIA

Oh, and I looked for a previous thread about this but didn't find one so if I've missed it, feel free to share the link. Thanks!!

Re: Let's talk about burping.

  • I burp at each feeding. Each burp session is 15-20 mins easily...burp after each breast and the supplemental bottle. He is a spitter & it takes time to keep cleaning both of us us. I've tried many upright positions & neither seem to work better. We started Zantac on Friday and he doesn't spit up as much but it still too much for me. A feeding takes about 1.5 hours from start to finish.

  • We are EFF now, so I burp after every oz (4.5 oz total). I usually put him over my shoulder and alternate between patting and rubbing. It takes anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. He fusses as soon as I take the bottle from his mouth, so if it doesn't come after a couple of minutes I just give him the bottle back.

  • When I'm nursing, I tend to burp when he takes a lull from eating and also sometimes as frequently as every 5 minutes when I first start nursing and he gets the 'let down' where I'm gushing milk.

When I bottle feed him, I stop to burp him every 1/2 to 1 ounce.  We also have gas problems and while I'm sure this helps to some extent, he still has screaming fits sometimes until he passes  gas.

  • I'm EBF, and burp when he stops to take a breath. As I've mentioned before, he is a rapid fire eater: He rarely feeds for longer than 7 minutes, and never from both sides, so I try to "force" him to slow down by sitting him up to burp anytime he stops enough to take a breath. After he's done, I can typically get a burp from him, upright on my shoulder, within a minute. If I'm feeding him on my right side, so he's resting on his left, and he falls asleep, I tend to not pick him up to burp him, but let him stay there for 10 minutes or so, since I read that being on their left/tummy after a feeding is a way to prevent gassiness/reflux.

  • My DS has horrible gas. I burp a few times while nursing (only feed on one side) and then sit him upright for 15 minutes after he's done eating and burp him a little more. He usually lets out 3-4 during a feeding. If he's still crying and fussy I will lay him on his belly and I will also move his legs like a bicycle. If all of those things still don't work, I will give him the gripe water.

I also found that it helps to lay my DS down for ten minutes if he did not burp and then try it again as it usually gets things moving along.

This is exactly what I do! :) I'm never sure if I burped him enough!

  • I burp after one side breast feeding and then offer the other side. I do the over the should Maurer. But if that's not getting it I'll alternate between that and her sitting up. And for some reason the act of me going to stand will get a burp out if her (maybe holding her tighter). I'm in the same boat as op she has been really gassy and will wake from a dead sleep screaming. Really trying to head it off but sometimes she falls asleep during night feedings which makes it challenging.

  • I burp him after each side, usually for about 3-5 minutes, or until he's burped a few times. I do both over the shoulder burping and bending him forward on my arm with his bum resting on my lap and burping that way. Usually the lap burp works the best!

  • EFF here, we burp after every 1/2-1oz or whenever I sense I can take the bottle from her mouth without her fussing and crying. Best position is sitting her on my lap draped over my hand and giving her some good thumps on the back. I'm not very gentle about it, but she HAS to burp otherwise half of her meal will come up the next time she is reclined. If she is really crying for the bottle back and hasn't burped after 2 or 3 minutes, I'll give her back the bottle and make sure she burps the next time.

The problem I run into is that burping often lulls her to sleep and she doesn't burp well when she falls asleep. I honestly can't thump her back any harder though.
