Naps

So we have been sleep training and it seems to be working more at night.

Naps have been horrible. At the moment my lo is sobbing and won't go down.  Its killing me to hear him cry so much and for every nap. When does it get better? I hate all this negative association with sleep.  I also cant stand putting him through this.

How long and often are your babies napping now?

Napping took longer to fall into place after night sleep training. She finally started consolidating her daytime sleep after a few weeks and now takes a two hour nap in the morning in her crib.  I still let her take her afternoon nap on me. Daytime sleep is controlled by a different part of the brain than nighttime sleep, so it's important to get night sleep worked out before focusing on naps.  Focus on the first nap of the day and work from there.  Our LOs will probably get tired somewhere between 1.5-2.5 hours after they wake up for the day. Pick up on his cues and do a short nap routine (nurse, clean diaper, sleep sack, fan on) then you can put him in his crib and let him fuss for a bit.  If he's tired enough eventually he'll be able to fall asleep on his own for naps too.  Be patient and consistent. Naps are much more difficult to train, we had a rough time with it for awhile before my LO figured it out. She pretty much took all her naps on me for over two months before we sleep trained. Keep at it and good luck!

  • First nap is 2 hrs after she wakes up and is typically 1-1.5 hrs long. Second nap is 2.5 hrs later and about 1-1.5 hrs long. If there is time left, the third nap is 2.5 hrs later and about thirty min long.

I've also heard daytime sleep is harder. She still throws us for loops and some days will only catnap. I think it is affected more by external factors like teething.

  • We had a pattern going then the last two nights it went out the window. He slept through the night for 3 days, and I thought all was going well. Naps were good, but then sunday night he was a hot mess.
Our days usually start about 7, then I put him down around 9ish. He sleeps anywhere from 45 min to an hr and half. Then we go down for afternoon nap around 12-1 depending on what time he wakes up from morning nap. He is pretty much clock work and can't last longer than 2hrs before needing a nap. His afternoon nap is usually 1-2hrs. If its an hr then I try to do a nap around 3-4 if he naps good he'll be up until bed. We start bedtime routine around 6:15-6:30 and bath, book, bottle, bed by 7.

  • LO sleeps through the night. 10-12 hours. Sleeps around 11:00ish for one-two hour nap.  Around 3:00ish sleeps for 30 min-one hour. Goes to bed at 7:00.
  • Usually twice a day for anywhere from 45 min. to 2 hours each.  Occasionally more.
  • Night time is good.  He'll go to sleep on his own and sleep 10-11 hours with maybe one wake up where he needs me to give him his paci.

Naps, on the other hand, are a whole different story.  I think part of the problem is that he is with three different people throughout the week while I'm at work.  My mom two days, MIL two days and DH one day.  He fights it hard.  He takes 2 that are usually 40-60 min.  There've been a few times where he slept longer, but it's not often.  And you can forget laying him down awake.  He will scream and not give up.  I'd like to sleep train him for naps, it's just hard to do when I'm only there on the weekends.

  • He naps 2 or 3 times a day for 1.5 to 2 hours. If he has a third nap that one is only 45 min to an hour.

And maybe I'm abnormal but I did all sleep training at once it just makes more sense to me! I did a modified version of the sleep lady shuffle.

  • Naps 2-3x for 30min to 2 hrs. Usually the last nap is 30 min and the first two are usually an hour an a half or so.

  • 2 naps a day, each one is about 30-45 min. Sometimes if I'm lucky she'll sleep for an hour.

  • I was about to post something about naps because we are currently really struggling with them. He is sleeping great at night and is waking about 7:30am and his first nap around 10am is 1.5-2 hours and that one is still good. He used to take a second nap around 3:30pm he would usually sleep until I woke him up no later than 5 or it would mess with his bedtime. The past 3 days he has refused to take his afternoon nap and then gets so fussy around 4 for the rest of the night and we've been putting him to be a little earlier. Sorry for all the rambling, I know that wasn't helpful but we are having a hard time too!

We have the same nap schedule as this.

  • LO usually naps once or twice a day for 45 mins to two hours. I just go with his cues - they are not at a scheduled time. The amount of time he fusses before sleeping varies from just a couple minutes to maybe ten or fifteen. If he fusses longer it is usually because I laid him down a little late (he got too tired).

  • He usually will take 3 naps a day. Morning at 9ish, sometime between 12 and 2, then a late afternoon nap around 4 or 5. Length of naps varies big time. 30 min-2hours. I haven't really figured this out yet.
