Weight gain

I am 26 weeks today and I have gained 30lbs so far. I'm worried I gained too much at the beginning and am trying to eat healthier now. I am wondering what my calorie intake should be each day?? I was 130 at week 8 and now I am 160. I don't want to gain much more but my doc says no diets. I'm trying to stay away from carbs and refined sugar. Any other tips?? How much did you gain? They say 25-35 is normal but I still have 3 months left!!! Thanks so much!!

  • I am not really any help but just wanted to say I am in the same boat. I had an appt yesterday and I am up 30lbs already. My doctor said she doesn't want me losing any weight but just focus on lots of fruits, veggies, and lean protiens. Definitely try to stay clear of carbs. I know my Mom gained 45 with her first and my sister gained 50, but I really don't want to get that high.
  • Fruits = sugar, sugar = carbs. Most veggies, especially root veggies = carbs.

This. Carbs are not evil. And if you "stay clear of carbs," I would call that putting yourself on a diet....

There are a lot of basal metabolic rate calculators out there.  Just google a few with your current weight and activity level.  That will give you an idea what you need to maintain, plus add about 180 a day for pregnancy (some sources say 300 a day extra).  I think the key is just moderation.  I really believe changing what you eat is a lot harder than changing portion size.  Are you exercising?  You can safely exercise during pregnancy, it doesn't have to be vigorous, 30 minutes of walking a day is very beneficial for you and for baby.  Don't beat yourself up over it, but yes the more you gain now the more you will have to lose after baby.

  • Lots of protein, cut down on the sweets.  With DS1, I had gained about 35 lbs at 30 weeks.  I only gained an additional 5 lbs between 30 and 38 when he was born.  A lot of it was water weight.  Are you swollen at all?

  • If your doctor isn't too concerned and you already know how to and do eat healthy, I wouldn't worry, honestly. Women gain different amounts during pregnancy. You can't compare your gain go the gain of Internet strangers.

  • I am tracking all of my calories on myfitnesspal.  I am aiming to eat about 2200 calories a day right now on average.  However, I started out weighing more than you so my maintenance is naturally quite a bit higher.  When I previously posted on this, I think most were eating about 2000 calories a day.  I also track nutrients and have been trying to get more protein.

So far I have gained about 14-16 pounds at 25.5 weeks, but that has been thrown off by the last month because I got a horrible stomach virus in January and actually lost about 3 pounds and am just now back up to where I was before the stomach virus.  So I was up about that same amount of weight at 21-22 weeks as I am now.

  • Yes thank you. I was a bit surprised at the general disgust from my question but I will try to ignore them. I do yoga twice a week and I walk once or twice a week. It's hard for me, as I work 50 hrs a week, to exercise 'regularly'. I am not swollen at all. I feel like I lived on a diet for so long before being pregnant that I used pregnancy as an excuse to eat what I wanted in the first few months and now I'm trying to make up for those unhealthy choices. Honestly I just don't know what to expect as this is my first pregnancy and only have two other friends who have babies and one gained 40+ lbs and the other only 20lbs. I have heard that it's harder to have a natural birth if you gain too much weight. So I am worried about that.
  • FTR, it's not disgust. I think we just agree with @Kat8805--it's one of those posts that's been posted many times before, as recently as yesterday in fact, so it's easy to search for the answer without re-posting.

I agree with Kat's last post as well--everyone is different and you really just need to make sure you're healthy and your baby is healthy.

It sounds like you know what to do and were likely reacting to both coming off strict food rules (I was paleo for 3 years and no carb but before I got preggers had slowly transitioned to adding some gluten free grains in as I can't do gluten) and being a FTM. If you were dieting hard or had tanked your metabolism at all by eating too little weight gain is just a result of feeding your body now and growing a human- so just relax, don't worry about it, and focus on just getting more nutrient dense foods in and maybe less refined carbs if that has snuck in.

  • Thank you for your reply. I did not think about the diet pre pregnancy affecting my over all weight gain. I recently downloaded an app to help me realize what I eat each day. Instead of eating cookies just because they are available, I will be tracking what I eat so I remember what I take in and realize the choices I make each day. That's where the recommended daily calorie question stemmed from. The app does not take into consideration that I am pregnant, so I am sure it is not giving me an accurate "daily goal" for calories. Maybe I will search for an app targeted for pregnant women and not people trying to lose weight (which I assume this one is for). Thanks again!

I think you can still use it, but just adjust your calories accordingly.  I use myfitnesspal which does not allow for being pregnant.  I have just set it to maintenance and added back in a few extra calories.  I think my maintenance is about 2050 calories or 2100 or something and I added back in an extra 100 or 150 or 200 or so.  I don't remember the exact number, but I went by how many "extra" calories were supposedly needed in 2nd tri.  It is something that a google search should turn up. Good luck to you!

Just try to relax about the weight gain. Some people gain a lot, some people gain very little. I'm more of a believer that your body will put on whatever it needs for pregnancy, your job is just to feed it healthy food, but it don't think you really have that much control on how much you gain (says the chick who put on 50lbs with her first baby,LOL). I'm eating exactly the same now than I did pre pregnancy. My weight was just stablilizing before, I had just lost 50lbs of pregnancy weight over 9months. Now I'm consistently putting on 1lbs a week. So exact same diet and exercise level= 50lbs weight loss in 9m = 25lbs weight gain at 25w (to be clear I'm not dieting, just, making healthy choices). I definitely woudlnt cut out entire food groups now. I try to make sure I eat fruit and/or veggies at every meal, eat some kind of protein every meal, and stick to reasonable portion sizes for starches. I don't really eat anything fried or junk food. I try to limit fast food (burgers and pizza) to once a week. I indulge in dessert every night.
If you're worried have your Ob refer you to a nutritionist.

Fruits are a great source of nutrients but as mentioned, they are actually really high in carbs because of the natural sugars. Bananas are one of the worst, however because I have started getting leg cramps, I have added bananas into my diet. Unfortunately OP, now isn't the best time to try and cut back (that was first tri). However, I would look at reducing the sweets, maybe adding in some protein shakes so you feel full and talk to a nutritionist. Also, for days you may be feeling bloated I suggest some hot lemon water to just help flush you out a little. Good luck!

  • I've gained 24 at 25.5 weeks...but I weigh everyday and notice it can fluctuate up to 3 pounds daily. I try not to worry about it. I know I am personally doing the best I can. I was very strict before pregnancy and continue to exercise 3-4x a week

So glad I use babycenter. You guys are all fucking bitches EXCEPT those with a helpful response. If you don't want to respond SHUT THE FUCK UP.
  • Oh lord...yes, the same questions get asked over and over again, but WHO CARES?  Don't answer them if you think they are so annoying.

To the OP, in the past three weeks I feel like I went from moderately pregnant to hugely ridiculous.  I mean, I basically blacked out and ate five rice krispies treats on the train ride INTO work the other day, with my only real recollection being some crunching and the wrappers in my lap.  Now my weight gain isn't bad, but I think it was my uterus moving on up has made each pound feel like ten....

Def talk with your doc,  if you were underweight before, your gain may be more.  And be prepared, because when that swelling and water retention starts, you can feel like your lbs are adding up faster than you can eat the calories!
  • I agree with everyone else when they say talk to your healthcare provider. I was normal weight before my dd and gained around 42 or so pounds total. My OB had no problem with that at all. This time around it looks like I'm on track to gain the same and I have no problem with that.
  • I feel like I was gone from this conversation for an hour and shit hit the fan :-@
    <image>
  • I go to a group of doctors so I never see the same one twice and sometimes I feel like it's just in and out. Like I'm another number. I don't feel like "normal", which my dr told me is 25-35 lbs, is really normal at all!! From what I'm seeing it's more like 35-55lbs! I guess what's why I don't trust them. I thought that hearing other women say they gained the same as me and they are fine would help be relax about it because lately it's all I think about. I defiantly understand about the ketones, which was not something I considered before. So in the end I am glad I brought this up. Although I was sad at first when certain people acted like I was a stupid little 16 yr old worried about gaining a pound...
