How long...

How long do you plan on rear facing LO. I plan on at least 2 but I'm not sure how much longer than that. I guess for me it's as long as he's comfortable rear facing after he hits 2. What are your thoughts?

Re: How long...

  • I am rear facing until Morgan is too big for it.  Even if her legs are bent, which they aren't right now, she can sit comfortably back there.  We are going to invest in a new car seat when we get our tax refund so I can buy one that has a higher rear facing weight limit, I think ours is 35-40 pounds now.  I also want to get a seat with a max limit of 100 pounds so we can use it for a very long time.

  • I plan to as long as she's within the limits. We have size4me, so until 40lbs. The height is ridiculous on it, so that's not an issue. She's already bending her knees, not an issue.

  • As long as she lasts in the carseats that can be RF... got the MySize 70 & have yet to transition to it from her infant seat, but will soon. We figure she'll out grow by height before weight whenever the time comes.

  • I plan to until she hits the limits of the seat (gracosize4me & radian120). DD is tall and is already bending her legs but it doesn't seem to bother her at all.

  • As long as possible. It is absolutely the safest way until the child hits the seat limits.

  • Probably around 2 like the recommendation.

I know it's much safer for them to stay rear facing as long as possible and it would be great to do it until DD2 maxes the limits. But seriously our car is tiny. When DD1 got to around the age of 20 months, I practically had to bend her in half to get her into the car seat due to the angle of the car doors frame and how tall she was. She also screamed, arched her back and pushed off the back of the seat every time. So while I know their safety is more important that the inconvenience of getting her in there, it does eventually come to a point where you have to as a parent make a decision. She was close to the recommendation so we changed her to forward facing.

We will most likely be having to buy a second car soon, hopefully it's something different. We are hoping a small SUV. It was always a 1,000 times easier getting DD1 into the back of my MIL's Highlander than it was our car. Also hopefully, DD2 will be a bit better about staying rear facing so we can do it past the recommendation.

  • We have radian r120s and will keep her rear facing until she outgrows the limits.
