Trigger shot

My RE and I had a long in depth talk and went through all my results yesterday and now she is thinking that I have a leutal phase defect and my progesterone is going down too fast to support a pregnancy. She gave me two options. One is to do the vaginal progesterone starting three days after ovulation. This is what we chose to do. She said if it doesn't work then she wants to try the trigger shot next cycle. My question for you guys is if I am ovulating on my own without the trigger shot do you think this will help? Anybody else ovulate without the shot but still take it?
Edit: too many typos :/

Re: Trigger shot

  • I can't remember - are you doing medicate cycles or just a natural O? Triggering gives an extra boost to egg maturation and will cause all follicles to ovulate if more than 1 is mature. I've never heard of anyone treating a LPD with a trigger, though.

Two DDs 10/08 and 08/10, no primary IF
    TTC #3 since 10/2011 - dx unexplained/weak ovulation
     3 BFN clomid + TI cycles, 5 BFN clomid/gonal f IUIs, 1 mmc IUI
2/19/2014 IVF #1 Unexpected low E2 (oversuppressed) -> increased to max doses = 3 or 4 follicles, converting to IUI
BFFP Saw 1 beautiful heartbeat at 6w6d, follow up u/s at 9w showed mmc. Eff this.
    NTNP 5/2014-9/2014, OPKs and TI 10/2014 - 1/2015.
RPL testing all normal, AFC, AMH, and FSH all normal.
    IVF 1.2 1/22/2014 natural cycle start, AFC 28, 300 gonal f/150menopur.
ER 2/3/15 14R 8M 3F w/ICSI Day 5 transfer on 2/8/15 of one "Grade A+" blast and have TWO frosties!

  • I think the goal of the trigger shot is to have more optimal ovulation. That's at least how my RE explained it. You will have to go in for an ultrasound, usually on CD 12 and they will know then when to do your trigger. My RE said we could try just having timed intercourse and use OPKs, but that triggering sometimes helps the egg along instead of it sitting in the follicle longer than is best. I ovulate while on Metformin and my RE was still recommending triggering.

  • I had been ovulating early (too early) and with a CP last year that showed low progesterone, I started taking Clomid. I also did a trigger shot and took progesterone. Would the RE let you do both the trigger and progesterone? I feel like anything you can do to make sure everything lines up can't hurt. Good luck!
  • I don't know the answer to your question. I will say, I did not mind the trigger shot and would do it again. It only cost us $80 for one shot which is cheap in the grand scheme of infertilty drugs.

  • I don't have any experience with trigger shots but based on the other ladies responses, I think it makes sense that it could help with LPD.  I had LPD issues, and while my progesterone level was decent after O, it fell prematurely.  Progesterone didn't do jack for me (lengthened my LP by one day but that day was a day of spotting anyway), so stronger ovulation appeared to be what my body is missing.  Sounds like the trigger shot could at least somewhat address a weak O.
    November 2010 - 10.5 week loss  o:)
    October 2011 - DS (7)  <3
    July 2014 - Stillborn DD (24 weeks)  o:)
    August 2015 - DD (3)  <3
    April 2018 - 5 week loss o:)

  • I'm on femera right now and this cycle I'll do progesterone after O.

  • Thanks for the advice! I'll have to take this into consideration for next cycle.

  • Me! I ovulate normally, but my RE has started me on medicated cycles with Clomid and Ovidrel. I think it's to maximize your chances as you know within a window of hours when you will ovulate. It also forces your body to ovulate at a certain time so your follies don't grow too big.
BFP: 5/10/14 after 14 cycles of trying!
    EDD: 1/21/15
    5/12 1st beta: 28
    5/14 2nd beta: 87.5
5/23: 3rd beta: 4000.6 + saw gestational sac and yolk sac
5/30: 4th beta: 17,852 + saw fetal pole and heard heartbeat! 127 BPM!
  • Me too!  I ovulate late in my cycle normally so I am on clomid/trigger shot combo.

Is the $80 cash, as our insurance doesn't cover any of this, I am on clomid and my RE has never mentioned a trigger shot and we do IUI with Donor Sperm. Any suggestions welcome.

  • I would ask about it.  At my RE they call it in to a specialty pharmacy, then the pharmacy contacts you for your payment.  I'm not sure all the choices, I just use a credit card that I pay off every month.  Then it shows up in the mail in about 2 days and you bring it to the next appointment.  If follies are ready, they give you the shot.  (I'm not doing iui, but my guess is that the iui would be the day after the shot.)
