Introducing Peanut Butter

When did you introduce LO to peanut butter?  A has already had a very small taste of it- I gave him a piece of toast with a tiny bit and he didn't have any sort of reaction, but I guess I am still nervous?  However, I'd really like to start working it into his diet if he does not have an allergy.

When you did introduce it, how much and in what way?

Thanks!

Re: Introducing Peanut Butter

  • Now I'm hungry for a PB&J sandwich! :)  We haven't introduced it yet, but I'm more afraid of the sticky consistency making it tough to swallow.  I think on toast would be a good start, but I have zero experience.  I'll be stalking this post to see what others say.

  • I am not there yet, but my good friend introduced a very small amount early on ( not sure exact age) and he got hives/red almost immediately. She said it is very quick. Sounds like so far so good with your LO. Her son is level 4 and requires an epi pen, and at age 8, knows that he does not like how he feels, so is vocal at parties, ect, not to eat anything with peanuts and cashews.

Well, funny story, it was memorial day weekend and we rented a boat and packed a cooler with snacks for the day.  LO was about 10 months old.  DH was on the boat and I was floating out in the water and he yells over, "You have to be more careful with your peanuts, Keegan keeps picking them up and eating them."  Que the instant horror, as I had not packed any peanuts that day.  So, LO's first peanut exposure was not only months earlier than I had planned, nor was it peanut butter, but rather who knows how old nasty sitting on rented boat floor peanuts.  Luckily no reaction.  I have since made him PB&J which he doesn't react to, but also doesn't like.

  • So if there was going to be an allergic reaction, it would happen right away?  I think part of my fear is giving it to him then sending him off to daycare and him having some sort of reaction when I am at work.  Yes, I realize how much I sound like a first time mom.

  • DS is having a hard time transitioning to solids and our doctor suggested it at our 12 month appointment. We have no family history of allergies so she said to go for it.

We introduced it to Pip around 15 months.  Happy we waited - because she's allergic.  Within a couple of minutes she started pulling on her ears saying that they hurt, started scratching her torso saying she was itchy - but no outward signs.  She was old enough to let us know that something wasn't right and allowed us to get her Benedryl just as the hives started appearing.

PS - Our family has no history for food allergies of any sort, so we were stunned.

  • We don't have any history of allergies in our family so with DD we tried a dab of PB on her chin at 6 months old. We looked for redness or rash after about 5 minutes and there was nothing so the next day we let her suck a little off of our finger and she has loved it ever since. We will do the same with DS.
  • We gave it around a year. No reactions. We did have an epipen on hand just in case though. Also unbeknownst to me I had given DD strawberries and she did fine. My pedi was surprised at one of her earlier appts because he says those can be an allergy and I had no idea. He said NBD since she's not but I was surprised to hear that strawberries are an allergen.
Geez, I have been giving A strawberries since December.  I didn't know that either.
