Issues getting IUD?

Went to the doctor yesterday and inquired about an IUD. I was told the manufacturer raised the prices, but the insurance hasn't caught up with the corresponding coverage. He, apparently, is also under contract as to how much he can charge.

Reader's Digest... I can't get an IUD until whatever ridiculousness is straightened out I'm told. I walked away with a script to the mini-pill and an offer of nexplanon.

Question: I see people talking about their IUDs left and right... Is this not happening to anyone else? It seems it would be more of a widespread issue if it began with the manufacturer.

Also... Any BFers do nexplanon? Tell me about it. My dr said it won't effect my supply at all. I have done zero research on it, though.

Re: Issues getting IUD?

  • I'm assuming mine was 100% covered. Was placed right after birth before they stitched me up. Only bill I received was $250 for labor & delivery.

Sounds like your doc is just slow? I loooove the IUD so much, I'd ask what the difference is in price and consider paying it OOP.

He said because of his contract, I'd have to go directly through the manufacturer and have the insurance reimburse me if I wanted to pay the difference. PITA.

He's going to call me in a couple months to reassess the IUD, but still... Grrr.

Is there any way you could get into another doc that doesn't have the same contractual restrictions just to get the IUD and handle the billing with your insurance through their office? Then just return to your normal doc? Just trying to think outside the box for you! That has got to be super frustrating.

A friend suggested that, too. Is that something a doctor would do, I wonder? See me for a procedure but not become my doctor? Guess it wouldn't hurt to call...

  • My insurance covered mine 100%, I called first and checked, my doctors office wouldn't do it until I verified with my insurance company. This was 2 weeks ago.

    This was my experience also.

  • I'm getting the nexplanon next week. It's the same hormones as the mirena I believe and is good for 3 years. I feel more comfortable with that than an IUD I think, although I've never had either.
  • I know sometimes my suggestions aren't valid because I'm in Canada and rules are different but.... Do you have sex clinics in your area? After DS1 was born my doctor wouldn't give me birth control due to his religion (long story, he cannot deny me but I changed doctors since) so I went to the sex clinic and got the pill there. Maybe you can get an iud there instead?

We have Planned Parenthood where I could probably get the pill, but doubtful on an IUD.

  • Most insurances let you choose to go wherever for birth control (and most women's health issues) I believe, probably as long as it is still in network. I would check to see, more than likely you can get BC from whom ever you choose.
  • Thanks ladies! As seeing I'm the only one with this issue, I definitely have a few phone calls to make. Thanks for the info :).

  • That doesn't make a lot of sense. Your doctor probably doesn't want to adjust off the contractual adjustment the insurance carrier applies which is usually pretty significant on things like this. Due to the increased prices he probably isn't making as much money as he used to so maybe he just doesn't want to do them anymore? I got the Skyla and it's covered 100%, but that just means my insurance pays 100% of their allowable and no portion of it is left for me to pay. If he is in private practice you may have better luck at a hospital owned clinic or something more along those lines.

I have the implanon, which is now nexplanon, only bc my script has been at my doctors office since before I got pregnant, I got it put in three weeks ago today and so glad I got it! I cannot remember to take meds for nothing and I don't want any more babies any time soon! The only problem I had with getting it inserted was when it started to heal and it itched like crazy! They told me I could have sex right away but to use back up for a few weeks! and it's good for three years so that's a plus! -- adding- I breastfeed with it too and it hasn't affected my supply!
  • Mine was covered a 100% but I'm contemplating now of having it removed.

    Why?
Since I've had it inserted I've been bleeding more than the norm. I know it's one of the side effects but mines is extremely heavy and has gone all the way through and I can't be having that when I'm in public. I made an appt to be seen this fri.
