Getting around/going places at 30-34 weeks

What was your level of activity at that point? We often have busy weekends and my calendar is already starting to fill up for spring. I'm wondering how much I'm going to be able to do. For Easter we drive over an hour each way. We have a First Communion 2 hours away. Various birthday parties and get togethers closer by.

I've given people a heads up that depending on how I'm feeling I might not make it. And when I tell them how far along I'd be they say, oh you should still be fine at that point.

I dunno, maybe I will be.

Re: Getting around/going places at 30-34 weeks

  • I was put on modified bed rest at 27 weeks due to shortened cervix + contractions. Meaning I could move around my apartment freely but had to limit excursions. And when I did go use a car and sit once I got to my destination.

You will find some women never have restrictions while others get then suddenly. I'd say as long as you are prepared to break plans it should be fine.

  • My OB told me not to travel more than an hour away after 28 weeks as a precaution. I had no issues but I stayed close to home from that point on.

  • I was good until about 34-35 weeks, but I had stopped working at the start of 33 weeks because I was having a hard time getting through the work week. I think the extra rest made moving around on the weekends a little easier. After 35 weeks I really didn't want to go anywhere more than around town, but part of that was because our hospital was already over 45 minutes away and which ever direction I traveled in made it closer to an hour and half to two hours away.

  • I really started to slow down 31-32w. It was hard just to take a shower and get dressed at that point. I listened to my body and took it easy, as much as I could, when need be but I didn't just sit on the couch either. I had no travel restrictions (I was dx w mild pre-e at 32w and no bed rest, but I did have to cancel a 5hr car trip). My water broke at 34w.

There was a wedding 3hrs away when I would have been 35+ that I waffled on going - I told the bride I was prob out but would make the call closer to the actual day and she was so very understanding. Obvs, we didn't make it.

I think you're handling it perfectly - dependingon how you feel, you may or may not make it. Things change so quickly that it's hard to be definitive so far in advance.

  • As long as all your plans are tentative, you're fine. I went to a bachelorette party at 30 weeks (the mani/pedi and dinner part not the bar hopping part), my shower at 33 weeks and a wedding at 34 weeks. The bachelorette party was 30 minutes away but everything else was local. I wouldn't go too far from your hospital that late in the game, but it's possible to be active locally.

  • By 28/29 getting around even walking got hard. I measured 10w ahead so it was like I was due. I couldn't walk anywhere w/out getting constant Braxton hicks contractions and it was just so uncomfortable to do really anything. Modified bed rest by 30w. Everyone is different though

I feel like a hit a wall last week (30 weeks). An hour drive, no problem. Doing stuff or having to talk to people/use my brain= problem. My level of exhaustion continues to grow.

  • I was taken off bedrest at like 33 weeks and the first thing my mom and I did was go to the mall to clothes shop. None of my maternity clothes fit anymore and I wanted to check out the baby stores for some cute outfits.

Lets just say, an hour in the mall and my mom was begging me to just go home. She couldn't stand walking so slow with me. Literally, I was walking like women do in labor haha. There was just so much pressure that I wasn't use to feeling and my belly was so heavy I had to wear a support belt or hold it up because it felt like my skin was tearing when I'd let it hang!

  • I had pretty severe pelvic pain starting around week 25 or so and it got much worse after 30 weeks. I carried until 38 1/2 weeks and stopped working somewhere around 32-33 weeks even though I have a desk job.  It was just too painful to walk and sit up straight in a desk chair all day.  I wasn't comfortable driving too much around that time (32ish weeks) because my reaction time was a little slow.  I got a scare one day while driving because I couldn't see well and couldn't turn around like I normally would to get a better view and didn't see a car that was in the blind spot of my mirror and nearly got into a fender bender.  I just didn't fit well in the car by that point.  Everything was uncomfortable and because of my pubic symphesis dysfunction, when I walked, I had to take excruciatingly tiny, slow steps.  I walked slower than my 90 year old grandmother.  And it was painful.  But, I still got out on weekends with my husband to a few backyard bbqs and out to dinner as long as he drove and I didn't have to walk too far.

  • Things have been rough for me since about 28 weeks (now 31). I can't stand or walk for long periods. I also used the scooter to shop at WalMart. I'm only working part time and trying to take it easy the rest of the time - minimal housework, avoiding stairs and no shopping. Riding in the car is ok, but I haven't had a need to go much farther than 30 minutes or so..

  • Yeah, didn't do much by then. I was on MBR, though I did make it to a few family holiday functions (it was Christmastime).....I did skip the one that was an hour away, though.

Those people who are saying "You'll be fine at that point" are not talking about a third tri w/ twins.....it is very very different. You will be carrying many more pounds worth of baby, not to mention two placentas, two amniotic sacs, etc. My friends who were pregnant w/ singletons at the same time as me were all up and energetic and going places up to the end.....me, not so much.

  • Yes 3rd tri with twins is way different than with a singleton!!

  • I got super uncomfortable at 34w, prior to that, I was ok (but on bedrest, so how I felt was sort of a moot point).

  • I slowed down after 32 weeks and then REALLY slowed down after 34 weeks. Driving for 2 hours would have been torturous. I think it's good that you have told people that you may not be able to make it. Maybe (hopefully!) you'll be fine at that point, but if you have to back out at least it won't be a huge surprise.
