IEP for Tourette's,..?

I don't know if any of you ladies have kids with TS but if you do, I could use a little advice. My daughter is about to be 6 and her school is pushing me into an IEP for her. Here's my issue with it, she can't control her ticks but she is acting out at school because she says she is bored. Now she is not the only one in her class that acts out, over half the classroom has issues everyday and they are in a regular k class's.

Anyways I have met with the school psychologist and she has informed me that my daughter will but benefit from an IEP because she has no need but that my daughter is receiving encouragement from her teacher for these behaviors. Now to be fair I met with all the school officials yo ask what their goals would be for her on an IEP and none of them even gave any responses other then we don't know. Today we have out ETR meeting because I'm trying to entertain their request.

What should I look for in an IEP under these circumstances? Am i right to insist that this is unnecessary? Any advice would be appreciated. I have requested a classroom change and my request was denied.

Re: IEP for Tourette's,..?

  • Thank you for answering. Her acting out was hard to figure out at first because her teacher was very shut down about talking to us about it. But since going to the dean I now get notes daily. She has a problem with staying in her seat once her class work is done. She is also getting into trouble for her ticks, she mocks, repeats, clears her throat constantly, blinks constantly, etc.

I know usually bringing other kids into the equation is a big no no but in this case it is concerning. Her teacher is brand new and is overwhelmed and I think her class plays on that. Her school has a policy where once your child gets in trouble so many times a day they send home an orange slip and I have noticed there are 8 of those slips bring passed to parents every day. I have also observed the class from outside the room and she has no consistent disciplinary actions in place, for example she. They act out she asks them a series of question: what are you doing, are you supposed to do it, and why are you doing it, then she drops it but she gets frustrated when they do itagain in 5 minutes.

I requested the classroom change because the dean told me she trialed putting my D in. Other classrooms to give her teacher a break during the day and those teachers had no problems with her also she only seems to have issues in her homeroom, her specials teachers say they never have an issue outside of her ticks.

As far as her dx, she got it from her neurologist, I started taking her to a neurologist when she was 2 fit seizure activity but we still have no solid answer in the siezures. When he diagnosed her he said her TS is more then likely a result of the siezure episodes. I have often wondered if she has aspergers and have been toying with having her evaluated just to be sure she is properly diagnosed. The reason I am so hesitant in the IEP is because she is not suffering academically at all and because the psychologist has said that she won't benefit from it. I do see the advantage side if it though as you have pointed out and as I haved learned from my dons IEP and how well he is doing now.

  • Yes, it is s US school, it is a charter academy and they have a k-2 dean and a 3-5 dean and a 6-8 dean and a principle.

Right now I don't have anyone else helping to advocate got her because she is on the waiting list for evaluation through the behavioral facility here. I'm also waiting to hear back from the board if developmental disabilities. I keep telling the school that they can't hold her ticks against her but I seem to be hitting my head against a brick wall with them.

They are refusing my request for a new teacher because they said it is school policy because if they go it for me they have to for other patents to regardless if it will help my child or not. I have placed calls to the schools head office as it is a national academy I keep getting railroaded. I have thought about pulling her out and placing her in a public school but all the schools in my area that she can get into are in academic failure.

Thank you, I'm going to have them do an MFE and see where we go next.
