PT Nanny?

DH and I are looking at the possibility of hiring a PT nanny. We have one LO right now with a second due in a few weeks. DD loves her daycare, but we'd alos love it if she could be home a couple days per week and it would be nice to have the two together. We did find someone we're interested in, but she's asking a bit more for an hourly rate than we expected. Granted, we knew we'd pay more, but when we did the math, it comes to an extra $4k per year for the two days. I guess I have two questions. One, is it rude to offer her a litlte less than she asked for if she seemed firm? And second, if you've had this kind of arrangement before, was it worth it to you?

Re: PT Nanny?

  • Just to clarify, both would attend daycare 3 days per week, with the nanny coming 2 days per week.

  • Two kids in daycare is expensive, but an extra 4k for them to be home PT, is a lot. There is no way my family could swing that. I guess I just don't see much of a benefit to them being home those 2 days, to make it worth the extra money. They are still being exposed to all the daycare germs, which is the main benefit to a FT nanny (IMO).

  • I agree with the PPer. If you are already in daycare PT, I don't see the point of not being there fulltime, especially at a much added cost.

We have a FT nanny and the kids don't go to daycare at all.  We pay a premium for this but it's worth it to us.

  • I don't think the benefit of having the two kids together at home a couple of days a week will outweigh the extra cost of the nanny.  My DD and DS are 3 years apart and yes they interact but it's only for a few minutes at a time.  I don't think my kids would benefit (more than being at daycare) for being with each other all day.  It definitely doesn't seem worth it to me.

  • Thanks, I'm really starting to rethink this situation a bit more now!

Yea and FWIW, my kids are just now sort of starting to play together.  And still, it's really minimal.

  • The extra $4k/yr is not worth it if your kids are still in DC 3 days/wk IMO. You will still have DC illnesses to contend with and therefore sick days to take from work on the days you don't have the nanny. Also your kids may have a hard time going back and forth between DC and nanny.

When figuring out your costs of having a nanny, don't forget to factor in a bonus, paid vacation and taxes. So if you haven't added all of that in already, it may end up being even more than $4k extra.
