Pumping at work-how's it going?

How is everyone doing at work and how is pumping at work going? I pump 3 times during the day. We just moved into our new corporate headquarters and I was really hoping that they would have made an office or space just for pumping but they didn't so I still have to go into the bathroom so it's kind of a pain and at times grosses me out bc it's in a bathroom but hey it works just wanted to see how everyone else is doing pumpin at work!

Re: Pumping at work-how's it going?

  • It's going HORRIBLE. We have a first aid room that is used as a pumping room as well. It's disgusting. There's a toilet and an old gross mattress that sick ppl go to lay on. Milk all over the table and little dead flies on the floor. So I've been pumping in a "media room" that's empty and just used mostly for storage. Well, today I was informed I have to use the first aid room because an intern will be using the media room. I cried. The admin says she'll help get it cleaned up but it's just too far gone for me to feel comfortable having my daughters food in there.

  • You ladies are warriors... We've slowed down on BFing and the work conditions were a main reason.. room in the basement next to the boiler room??

Where do you work that your coworkers feel so sick they have to go lay on a mattress? Tell them to grow up and act like adults.
Yeah. If they're sick enough to need to lay down on a mattress, they should probably just go home.
I agree, I'm not sure how or why the room ended up as a first aid room with a mattress..I wouldn't touch that nasty thing if you paid me. I'm really discouraged by it all. Wah,wah....
  • I am pumping right now and LOVING IT! It is like have 3 breaks from running around the building! I also may just be on a high because LO started new daycare today and actually DRANK a bottle! Hooray that the milk I am pumping is not going to waste! I have an "office" which is a server room that is super cold on the 3rd floor of my school. No one comes to bug me because no one wants to hike up here. Downside is that the middle school is on this floor so I do have occasional freakouts that a middle school boy is going to jump high enough to see over the paper covering the door windows. I dare a kid or coworker to walk in...no shame here! I have only really pumped 3 days at work about 3 times a day for 15-20 minutes and so far so good. I get anywhere between 7-10oz the first pump, 4-7oz the second pump and 3.5oz the last time. I hope it stays this way and that my supply doesn't tank because of stress. Keep it up mamas!!

  • I'm actually going back to work tonight :( but I work as a nurse in an ER. Apparently it's in the water at work, because I was 3rd to have a baby in the last 6 months and there are 2 other moms on mat leave. The only private area on our unit is the grieving room (where we invite family back to tell then their loved ones are dead or dying) so that's where the pumping is going down :/ I'm dreading that awkward moment when they walk a family back and I'm in there half naked, "suprise!!"

Jesus, are you serious?  There has got to be a better solution than this.

I swear. It's more likely a coworker would interrupt me looking for a quiet place to take a nap, but regardless I'll be putting a post-it or some other marker on the door. I really could care less if a coworker saw me but having a patients family member see me, especially just prior to receiving that news - can't even imagine!!!
  • I've been alternating pumping in a locked conference room (which is pretty nice since it has a comfy chair, but it's really far away from my desk) and the recording studio (which does not have a locking door but it's close to my desk). When I pump in the recording studio, I'm always paranoid that I will some how turn on the video or audio and record a pumping session.. Ugh!

But pumping is going well. I get about 15oz from 3 sessions. I double pump.

  • Ah! I am feeling lucky. We have two nice rooms at work that we each have a key too. There's a thing outside the door that we turn to occupied or vacant. We have scheduled times in 30 min blocks, but open times are first come, first serve. The room I use has a table and chair, couch, mini fridge and magazines.

I do 3 sessions and get 4-5 oz per session. Baby takes 3 or 4 4oz bottles during the day, so I keep up, but just barely. I also pump during our MOTN feeding or first thing in the AM feeding so I get about 3 oz then too.

I mentioned in the bf'ing thread that my coworker gets 10-12 oz per session. It's so depressing to see her full up half our mini fridge, but I know I don't want that kind of OS! I'm weirdly jealous/intrigued.

  • LO eats 10 ounces we I'm at work. I double pump twice at 11 and 1. I have been getting 10 ounces, but I pump in the morning before work so I have extra. I will be donating my extra milk since I currently have a huge stash.

  • I worked at an office with a nurse's office and they had a quiet room with hospital beds that you could take a 20 min nap on. It was fantastic if you were feeling a little sick, but not stay home from work sick. But they weren't dirty mattresses in the floor. It was very sterile and hospital like. They also had real lactation rooms that were separate, of course.

  • I've been double pumping at my part time job for a few weeks now. It's going ok. I pump twice a day around 11am and 2:30. I only get about 3-4 ounces from each side per session. Is this under supply? I have less of a supply this time around than with DD1. I'm able to just lock my door and pump in my speech classroom at my school. With DD1, I had to pump in the bathroom. Yay for an upgrade!

I admire all of you mamas pumping and working!! This is a huge commitment for our little ones!
  • @ninjamama86--Ah, the life of a nursing nurse! I'm waiting for the day when they role a code into my unused room We have a lactation room, but it's about a 5 minute walk from my unit (ICU), so I don't always make it there. GL! Finding time during those unpredictable days is all sorts of fun!

I'm going back to work day after tomorrow and have been quite worries about getting away... I don't think we have a lactation room and am worried about finding people to watch my patients (ICU). So, I've trained myself to go eight hours between pumps (EPer here). And of course I double pump to save time.
  • Pumping at work is terrible! We don't have a room I can go to in privacy. I go in a classroom while school aged kids are out and then this small staff lounge. Idk what I'll do when school is out and I can't use that classroom bc I avoid the staff lounge during other teachers lunch breaks. Oh and I only have 15 min to pump bc it cuts into my hr break so I rush and I spilled 2oz last week and cried my eyes out!

Am I the only one who can't get past grown ups not feeling well at work so they go lay on a dirty mattress? This is blowing my mind. I keep coming back to this thread thinking more people will be talking about it.

My last job had something similar too, called the "sick room." I dont really know if anyone actually used it to lay down, but hey, it was on offer.

  • @lamo1210 noooooo! DH made a comment about not crying over spilled milk and I could have punched him!! I guess I didn't tighten the Medela bottles well enough and over 2oz spilled all over the inside of the cooler and bag. So sad!

  • Um. Gag on the dirty mattress and flies on the floor- gross.

I pump and work and its great- it's just a part of my routine. The pump is like my cell phone, pretty much permanently attached! Luckily I have my own office that I can lock the door. DH installed some blinds and I have a sign that explains what I am doing and if anyone needs me, they can wait 20 minutes- there's only one person who actually knocked and was like,"uh hey Linds, um, your door is locked". Well no shit Sherlock! Learn how to read.
Sometimes I just shut the door and pretend to pump.

  • I went back to work last week and it went ok at my office. I wasn't able to get away to pump more than once per day.

My work also decided to send me off to our client's site without much warning which was super awkward and also required going to multiple offices to get badge clearance so I could access a room. I finally got it yesterday.

With all the stress, my supply has gone down since I got back.
  • Pumping at work is a pain and it is only my third day back. I try to pump every 3 hours to keep up with LO eating schedule but I'm worried that I won't be able to keep up eventually. I'm lucky that I have an office to pump in, and I work with mostly men who are petrified that they may walk in when I'm pumping. I could probably keep my door closed and no one would come to my office for days.
