Help me get LO to drink

something other than breastmilk please. Mira can't have dairy so we've tried like 4 versions of almond milk and she won't drink any of them. We've tried cold, heated up, bottle, sippy cup and she still won't drink anything other than breastmilk or water. I want to stop pumping at work. Also she's been cutting down her nursing sessions so I really think it's a good time to stop pumping at work. Thanks for any suggestions or advice!!

  • Try coconut milk. She might like it

Bella- DH gives her a bottle when I'm at work and she recently began wanting to lay in the crib with it and then she hands it to him once she's done and that's the only way she'll nap for him. The other bottle she gets with a meal so it'd be easy enough to put it in the cup instead. Soy milk has a lot of hormones in it and our pedi recommended that we don't give it to Mira. We are a dairy free household so DH and I use almond milk so ideally we'd like her to drink that but I'm open to other ideas..

Tavia- I hadn't thought of coconut milk; it might be worth a try. Thanks :)

  • Manda+Chase- The pedi said if we were going to cut down on breastmilk to substitute almond milk. We can't do dairy bc of her allergy; she is small and we do things like add olive oil to her food, lots of avacodos, etc so a higher fat content would be great but it can't be dairy based.

  • Don't worry about it! Just make sure she's getting fluids, protein, fat and calcium from other sources :) Caleb was the same way

  • Unfortunately my frozen stash is gone..we have tried mixing breastmilk with almond milk and she still won't drink it and it killed me to watch DH pour it down the drain. I literally only pump enough milk for the next day which is another reason I wanted to stop pumping.

Denise- I like your idea I'm just not sure how we'd get her to nap. I feel like if we can have her drink a bottle/sippy of something other than water she'll do better.. I dnk...

  • She will adapt! It will be tough I won't lie. Just do what you gotta do to get her exhausted enough to fall asleep another way like in a car or stroller. Or just CIO. Babies are very resilient

  • Chocolate "milk"?

Rice milk is sweet like breastmilk.  I agree with her, I don't like almond milk either.

Have you tried mixing it half almond milk half pumped breast milk?  Do you have a frozen stash that you can prepare that way?  Will she take almond milk in a bottle verses a cup?

This! I had to mix for 3 weeks to help LO adjust. I started with 25 almond milk/75 BM. I did this for one week and then did 50/50, then 75/25. The gradual adjustment helped her and she had no issues with drinking it straight after that.

  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies! I've been hesitant to try mixing the breastmilk/almond milk bc if she doesn't drink it then it's wasting the breastmilk I work so hard to get. I think we may try coconut milk and see what happens. I hadn't considered rice milk and would have to research more about it..
