Parenting after a Loss

Sippy, straw, cup challenges (melly918)

DD rarely takes in fluids during the day when I am away at work. I'm still BFing her when I am home and we give her pumped BM, whole milk, and water as drinking options. The problem is nothing seems to work for her. We've tried the Munchkin sippy with the two handles, the Nuby straw sippy cup, and even assisting her with drinking straight out of the cup. We have let her try drinking from the sippy and straw herself and with assistance with us, but she will drink a minuscule amount, most of it dribbles out of her mouth, she pushes the cup away or just bangs it around or drops it on the floor. DH's has tried the bottles again (admittedly it's a slow flow nipple) and she doesn't finish more than 3 or 4 ounces at a time. We are at a loss with this. I have to make it up by nursing her a couple times between the time I return home from work and her bedtime, then she will wake up between 1-3 times a night to nurse. Any suggestions??

Re: Sippy, straw, cup challenges (melly918)

  • We are having similar problems with the sippy cup.  80-90% of the time he pushes it away and wants nothing to do with it.  If we give it to him, he just drops it on the floor.  He just this past week started to get the idea of sipping through the straw on the Nuby cup, but I have to hold it for him and squeeze a bit into his mouth to start off.  And half the time he takes in too much and chokes a bit, the dribbles half of it out of his mouth.  It's frustrating.  So I have accepted that even though his first birthday is around the corner, we are probably going to keep bottles around for the next few months as we keep working with the sippy.

Currently, DS gets 4 4oz bottles of milk (mostly BM with about 1oz of WCM in each bottle starting last week) and nurses twice a day.  I have no idea how long it will take to transition him to taking that much fluid from a sippy cup.

You mentioned going back to bottles and being concerned that DD only takes 3-4 oz at a time.  Is it BM?  If so, that seems about right.

  • When we started using the cup I feel like I tried them all.  Eventually what worked for us were the hard spout sippies, and while DS was learning to use it I took out the no spill valve.  Yes with the valve out you have to be careful about spillage, but it really helped teach him that there was liquid in there.  After a couple of weeks I put the valves back on and he knew to suck to get the liquids out.  We finally kicked the bedtime bottle habit at 15 months, and DS was still using a slow flow nipple.

  • Keep trying, it will take time, but she'll figure it out soon.  I have to remind myself that some days, she just won't be as thirsty as others, just like adults.  I'll give her the cup after she's had a meal but still in the chair, sometimes when she's playing on the floor I'll leave it nearby so she can grab it, and I give it to her while in the bath.  IMO, I think those are the times she would seem the most thirsty.  I know that's when I need a drink.

  • It took Ben awhile to get the hang of the sippy and the straw cup. It was just a matter of offering it repeatedly. We also tried a few different brands before we found what worked. Now we use Nuby straw and sippy (soft spout) cups.

We still offer it to him multiple times a day to make sure he gets enough fluids, but he has it available to him all day. FWIW, he stills bangs it on the floor, drops it (especially off his highchair), and dribbles water out of his mouth (on purpose- he thinks it's hysterical). But he is drinking from it.

  • Thank you all for the encouragement. I introduced a sippy around the time she was 8 months just together her started on it and get a little water in her system.  DH is the one who usually gives her the bottle/sippy/etc and I give her the boob. When I come home, she runs up to me pointing at my chest and trying to pull my shirt up. I don't mind as I love nursing and she is showing no signs of self weaning. I'm just worried she will dehydrate herself during the time I'm away from her. DH said that today she did take two bottles today (BM and WCM) and her diapers were quite wet.  I often find myself comparing her to DS and how he was already able to use a straw sippy at this age but the difference is he was in daycare at the time and she isn't. My H tends to give up and stick with bottles more than keep trying with the sippy.  Oh well.
