Throwing up at DC (1 vs 2 times)

So yesterday DS (age 2) threw up at daycare after naptime. I actually got a call from the school where they asked me whether he had any food allergies b/c when they were "changing" him (I thought they meant changing his diaper) they saw a rash around his mouth and tummy. He is sensitive to raw tomatoes, which he didn't eat yesterday, but he did eat ravioli with a tomato sauce. He doesn't normally react to that but I figured that it's totally possible that he's having some sort of reaction to it this time and I just told them to let me know if it seemed to be getting worse and we'd come get him.

What they didn't mention was that they saw the rash after they were changing his whole outfit down to his shoes b/c he had thrown up all over his clothes and nap map after naptime. Had I known that he'd done that, I would have just gone to pick him up.

I looked at the handbook today b/c I was surprised that they didn't call me to just come get him due to the vomiting episode and it turns out they only require pick up after a child vomits twice. I'm wondering if I should tell them to just call me next time if he throws up at all? I'm tempted to do this, but do kids throw up for no reason more than I think? What's your daycare's policy on one incident of throwing up at DC?

Re: Throwing up at DC (1 vs 2 times)

  • im really surprised they didnt call you the first time. DC called me right away when DS threw up..they also cleared out the entire room and moved the kids to another room and disinfected everything right away (opened all the windows, cleaned everything, washed sheets, etc). I would ask why they didnt call you, and suggest they do right away next time. Also you dont want to worry that other kids are kept at daycare with your DS despite vomitting.

  • Our official policy is also 2x vomiting, but they have always called to notify me after the first time, and I have always gone to pick them up. Sometimes little kids with colds do throw up while napping b/c of the phlem in their throats.

  • Thanks for the insight ladies. We are going to tell them to make sure and tell us the vomiting part next time. His spit up baby days have been over for a while now.

  • I think there might be some kind of rule like that.  My daughter throws up sometimes just from taking a dose of medicine that she doesn't like, or if she starts choking/coughing, so most of the time her throwing up is just a one-time thing not related to a stomach bug or anything.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • At our school it depends on the circumstance/age.  So like in the infant room 1 throw up with no fever they can stay - largely because it's so hard to tell at that age what's throw up/lots of spit up (and DS was a HUGE spitter so I'm grateful for this). But by the time you get to the preschool age kids you generally get a call immediately unless there's another explanation -like it's right after a meal where they clearly ate too much, then they give them 2x

This. Preschool age kids may not return to our DC until they go 24 hours w/out vomiting as well.

  • They will call me to let me know if DS has thrown up - typically it has been when he has a little bit of a cold and gets to coughing and he will throw up a little bit or if he eats too much and then runs around.  If he doesn't have a fever and is acting fine they will let him stay, they just call as an FYI.
