Silent reflux and sudden crying during sleep?

We are in the process of seeing if our lo has a milk sensitivty. Her pedi does think she has silent reflux based on symtoms I've told her. We switched her to Alimentum to see if symtoms she's having go away. It's only been 6 days so still waiting to see how we think it's working out.

IF your baby did in fact have reflux did they just suddenly cry out in sleep on and off? My little girl does this and I'm not 100% sure why but it doens't seem right to me or the hubby.

She is a very happy baby isn't colicy at all. But does squirm alot when feeding her. I sorta dread feeding because they are always a struggle. :(

  • I'm not a doctor, so take my advice as personal experience and nothing else:

Your LO sounds like she has silent reflux.  Don't waste time with Alimentum.  Get her on Prevacid.  You will have a new child within 10 days.

My DD#1 did the exact same thing.  She also had a MPI, so she was already on Alimentum.  That resolved the constant bloody diarrhea and horrible screaming episodes, but she continued to wake up 2-3 times per night, every single night, and each time I had to hold her upright in the glider for 1 hour or more before I could put her back down to sleep or screaming would ensue.  During the day, she would fuss during feedings, and all day long would spit up & swallow it back down.  The little time she WAS asleep, she would moan, whimper, and cry in her sleep all night long.  We repeatedly told our pedi we thought she had silent reflux.  Our concerns were repeatedly dismissed.  She told us to CIO.  I wasn't comfortable with that, because deep down I just knew something was wrong, so I kept getting up with her, holding her for hours each night, for months.  Finally, we couldn't take it anymore & found a new pedi.  The second we told them what's been going on, they said that was silent reflux & immediately put her on Prevacid.  10 days later, she was sleeping 12 hours at night.  She was on Prevacid until she was 2 years old.  She's fine now (other than her food allergies, but that's another story...), but it still makes me sad to think that she suffered for almost 10 months for no reason.  Thank God I didn't leave her to cry :(

If your pedi doesn't listen, take her to a GI dr.  Ask them to just try Prevacid for 2 weeks.  See if it helps.  If not, you're no worse for the wear after only 2 weeks.  Most of my DD's symptoms were at night while she was sleeping.  It also helped when I started letting her sleep on her tummy.

GL and I hope your LO feels better soon!

Thanks for yoru reply! Question....did your lo have a constant congested sounding nose as well? Mine deos and that started at 11 weeks she is 16 weeks now. Last her pedi saw her she said she can't physically LOOK at her and say it's silent relfux. But wouldn't a GI doc be able to? Should I do that first and let them rule out if it could be anything else?

I do worry if it's silent reflux and it's hurting her while sleeping it could be causing or COULD cause problems if left untreated. :/

  • DS1 had reflux like that and sounded stuffy--he also had severe food allergies.  DS2 had reflux but I think it's gotten much better and we've been off meds (although now his sleep is crap again so starting to think differently).

I would definitely at least try zantac and go from there.  Prevacid is usually the next step.

  • suddenly crying out during sleep is due to pain or choking...so that could be gas pains or abdominal discomfort due to protein sensitivities, or it could be reflux.  I have been in my daughters room when she has refluxed during sleep and she was totally still and then all of a sudden she was red in the face with tears in her eyes and paddling her arms like she was drowning.  She was choking on her reflux and then she cried out once she cleared it.  It is not fun to watch!

My DD is seeing a pedi GI tomorrow after getting an upper GI study done today.  They said she has no obstructions but definitely has reflux so we will see what the pedi GI says.
