Any dream feeders here?

So I heard more about this when LOs were younger, but here is the situation. DS goes down by 7 and I usually go to bed between 9 and 10. Lately he has been waking up and screaming to eat around 10 on some nights, but other nights might make it to 11 or midnight. Should I just keep doing what I'm doing and letting him eat when he wakes, or might it help to try to go in and feed him when I am going to bed so then I can get a few hours of sleep rather than 30 min. I know its kind of a gamble though since he might wake up and not want to got back down. Anyway, any thoughts or advice on this issue?

  • DS usually eats at 5pm and goes to sleep between 6-6:30.  I quickly learned that I could leave him and he would wake up sometime between 12-1 to eat, or I could wake him back up at 8 and do a dream feed and then he will sleep until between 4-6.  We obviously choose to do the dream feed so that everyone goes to bed at the same time and we all get a good nights sleep.

  • Is your husband awake then? I would have him do it. That's what we do if baby wakes and I'm in bed.

  • @bkeane619 He is working nights right now with no days off so it's me myself and I 24/7. When he gets his off days back I do want to try him giving DS a bottle when he wakes the first time

  • It is worth a shot. DS gets sleepy and often snoozes well before 8:00 but I always make sure he gets one more feeding somewhere around 8 or 9. He will usually sleep until at least 3 am if I do that.

Married my love 8-25-12 TTC #1 September 2012. BFP 2-2-13. DS born 10-16-13.
TTC #2 in December 2014. BFP 12-31-14. Expecting a September baby!
  • I am already getting up at least 3 times a night anyway, which is why I was thinking about trying this since he is usually good about going right back to sleep when I feed him. I guess if the night goes to shit I know not to do it again!

  • I dont but only because it's so hard to get him down in the PNP lately. I used to be able to nurse him at night and have him go right back to sleep

  • Yep we totally do a dream feed for that exact reason! Bedtime for LO is 7, she nurses around 6 before bath. I go to bed at 9 so I take her out of the RNP and straight to boob. She wakes up a little but peacefully eats on both sides then I cuddle her for a bit to make sure she's asleep and lay her back down. She's no longer waking around 11 to eat, now it's usually just 1 and 4:30, hallelujah!

I do a dream feed before I go to bed, and I think it saves me a MOTN wakeup. Worth a try.

LO goes to bed at 8ish
I pump one side at 11ish
Then we dream feed on the other side
    She sstn usually
If we skip this feed she's up around 3 to eat

  • If DH isn't home I would deft do a dream feed.

  • Yes!! DD goes to bed between 6 and 7, I go between 9 and 10, I dream feed and she chugs an entire bottle and doesn't wake until 2 or 3 if I don't she is up at midnight
  • Well after the past 2 hellish nights I think we are in full on 4mw mode. I didn't dream feed last night, but I am going to do it tonight. He went down about 6:30 last night and was up screaming for the first time at 9:30. I kind of wanted to gouge my eyes out.

  • We do a dream feed if I happen to be up late enough, however it's pretty rare that I'm up that late.  I love when we do do it though.  There's something so sweet and precious about a dream nursing session.
