Labor wardrobe

So, I was thinking about how I looked and felt in that ugly hospital gown last time I was pregnant. Has anyone altered a dress for l and d? I kind of want to cut up a super comfy dress I already own and put Velcro down the back and at the shoulders for breast feeding. Just thinking in would be more comfortable that way. Anyone ever done this before? I hate hospital gowns!

Re: Labor wardrobe

  • I thought about ordering one off of etsy but could never get myself to spend the money!

  • Just take yourself to Target and buy whatever is cute on the clearance rack in the lounge clothes section.

I'm all about feeling great in the hospital and much preferred my own clothes, so I hear you, but it's not worth that much work.

  • Do you mean after baby arrives?  I just wear a nursing tank and comfy pants - easy peasy for nursing!

As for labor itself - once we hit the thick of things, I give not a care what I'm wearing ;)
  • The hospital might not let you wear your own stuff for labor and delivery.  But afterward they should let you change.  I'm thinking about bringing a comfy night gown that I can nurse in, and thin robe. I've heard night gowns are best because they still need to check you after delivery, and it won't rub against a c-section scar if you have one.  Not something super-nice though because it'll probably just get ruined and you'll want to throw it away after.

  • I'll only wear the hospital gowns for labour. I really don't see the point in buying something that could get all bloody and messy. for after when I'm all cleaned up, I have a cheap night gown I purchased. It makes it easier for going to the washroom and for checks from the nurses and doctors.

I was allowed to wear a sports bra during labor, but they almost asked me to remove it. For after, I wore lounge pants and brought a tank top. I also got a cheapie robe from CVS or somewhere that I pretty much lived in. It was so easy to just wear that and open it for skin to skin and breastfeeding. Plus, it was super cheap, so I didn't care if it got messy.

  • For my son's birth, I got a nightgown in like a 3x that was comfortable. It wasn't a gown so it didn't open in the back, but I could move easily and it was short enough for access.

There are labor skirts - I almost bought one and am glad I didn't spend more than the $10 since it went in the garbage afterwards.
