Success after IF

My turn

Wasn't it Ducky that had a coworker issue last week? Now it's my turn; my fellow teachers will understand this and I'm sorry in advance if any of you are testers and do this ;). One of my dyslexia kids is up for his annual testing. His dyslexia teacher wants to pull him from my math class to do this. She is well aware that math is his lowest area and that we are three days behind because of ice days. She asked me last week when could she pull him and I said we are on a tough unit that he needs to be present for. I get an e-mail from her this morning asking which day this week could she pull him.

HELLO LADY!!! How about you pull him from one of his TWO electives and not a core class and especially not his lowest core class! I'm out today because H has had drainage from his eyes and I want to make sure it isn't pink eye so I told her, now we are even further behind and I've got this state testing breathing down my neck, right around the corner. Also, my school is being audited by our state education agency and this particular kid falls under the categories that we need to bring in for extra tutoring and show that we are doing above and beyond to help. I don't quite think taking him out of a core class to do testing when it's convenient for the other teacher is going above and beyond to make sure he gets the instruction he needs.

I know that testing these kids is really important and I do realize she has certain times she can do this, but when I've politely said no, he cannot miss class, why push the issue?? I just hate that electives run education nowadays. Nobody cares about academics anymore, it's all about those extracurriculars. Thanks for listening.

  • It really is frustrating and it's hard to get the point across without sounding like my subject area is more important than yours. I ended up asking her to take the student out today since I wasn't there and they were doing a review of some of the first semester things. She said she would so yay this student won't miss anything big!
