Which sound machine?

edited February 2014 in May 2014 Moms
DD sleeps with white noise on all night long. I've been using an app on my iPhone to play it, but the speakers are getting weaker and weaker. Also once LO2 arrives we'll need white noise in 2 rooms. I've been looking for a sound machine for DD's room. But they all say they auto shutoff after 15-60min. Does anyone have one that will play all night?

Re: Which sound machine?

  • We just got one from BRU called the Dohmie Serious Sleep Bundle. We've had it about a month and so far I love it. It is just a white noise machine, no lights, music or projections. It has just an on off switch and will run as long as its turned on. I typically find the repetitive noise very irritating, but this isn't. And while it doesn't sound very loud, it does a great job of drowning out the noise from my loud husband. The only thing I didn't like was the price tag, but I'd rather pay for one that is exactly what I was looking for and not buy 2 or 3 I hate.

  • We have the Munchkin brand one that has sound and a light projector.  It was less than $30 and has been amazing!  We use the timer, but you can have it stay on all night as well.

  • A fan.

Serves a purpose (bonus it will help with SIDS), is something we already have, and doesnt abruptly shut off after 45 mins like Sleep Sheep did.

  • We just bought DS a new one that is continuous but can be switched to turn off so you have options. It has 10 sounds and was about $20 on amazon. Conair was the brand.

This one.  It's awesome.  You can set the sound machine on a timer or have it run continuously.  You can plug it into an outlet, or use batteries when you're on the go.  It also has a headphones jack, so you can use it as speakers for an MP3 or CD player if you want to.  It also has a nice subtle blue night light.  And you can "lock" the buttons (read the instructions) for transport so it doesn't turn itself on and off (or once your 2yo figures out how it works).

We're on our second one right now (not through any fault of the device; we abused it beyond the limits of an electronic device).  It's our default travel machine, and the only reason we don't also use it in DS1's room regularly is that his humidifier also has a white noise sound generator.

If you're also looking for a cool mist humidifier, this bridges both worlds well.  The humidifier works as well as any other cool-mist we've tried (which is to say, not as well as a steam humidifier, but not terribly) and isn't a PITA to clean.  The sound machine has 4 noise options, including a basic white noise, and the sound is on a dimmer dial.  (When in use as a humidifier, make sure to sit the unit on a hand towel or receiving blanket; if you put it directly on a smooth surface, the condensation will collect into a puddle).

  • We have the homemedics one from target. It is a sound machine (rain, ocean, heartbeat, and a couple of lullabyes ... all of which are odd/annoying except for rain or ocean) and a projector (3 different revolving scenes). You can turn both sound and projector on or just one. It has a timer but will play continuously if you do not have the timer set.

We had an issue with the first projector dying and had to purchase a new machine after almost a year of nightly use. They run about $20.

This! I love the noise of a fan and since LO will be sharing our room I am not about to get some light up noise machine. We can both benefit from a fan

    It's a BOY

  • We just have an el cheapo, $15 cd player in DD's room, and bought a two disc "sounds of the ocean - sleep" set. Turn it on, hit play, repeat all. She also gets a heater for the colder weather and a fan for the warmer. Her room in our townhouse was always the coldest in winter, warmest in summer.

  • We registered for this one from Munchkin because it's voice activated. So you don't have to leave it on all night long, but will theoretically turn itself back on if baby fusses.

  • Thanks for all the good ideas

  • MARPEC. Seriously!!! We have one in our room and DD has one too, can't sleep without it now. It's a simple no frills sound machine, pretty much sounds like a fan but you can adjust the frequency and volume. It's the same one a lot of doctors offices use in their hallways so you can't hear what's going on in the exam rooms. A bit pricey for a sound machine but SO worth it, we put one on the registry for baby #2. We take it with us while traveling as well. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Ugggh...can't get out of the gray box!!  This one.  I got this for DS1 when he was about 8 weeks old and it has gone strong since.  He's 3 and a half now.  We love it.

I second this one.  It can stay on all night or with a timer and can also be voice activated (baby cries it comes on).  Our projector died a few months ago, but the sound part (which we mostly use it for anyway) still works great.  We will be getting another for baby #2.

This is the one we have.  DS is 2.5 and still uses his every night.  The projector doesn't work right, but we don't need that - just the white noise.  I just bought a second one today for baby's room.

  • FTM but I have used Homedics brand for myself, on and off for many years. They have a number of different models but IME the sounds are all the same - white noise, rain, etc. I am fairly certain the one I have now (not sold anymore) will run all night.

We have this for DD too. It's been great. It's cheaper at $20 and is still going after 2 years. We don't use the projector on it though so I can't speak to that.

  • We use a cool mist humidifier for white noise every night. It has a "loud-ish" fan type noise that is does when it's on. Works perfectly with a dual purpose :) This is the one we use.
  • The Homedics one with the projector. It's amazing. We tried the Munchkin one too, and it was okay, but it had a staticky background noise that came across on the monitor and bugged me.

  • We have this one for us in our bedroom and love it. I'll probably pick one up for LO's room.
