Compression stockings

I know a lot of you have mentioned compression socks/stockings, so hopefully someone can give me opinions.

We are on a 2800 mile move right now, stopping at least every 2 hours for bathroom and tomorrow we will be in one place for days, but before we even left our previous home my ankles were swelling a little, probably from the ridiculous amount of sodium I had the previous day, anyway now I'm thinking I want to buy a pair of stockings to help the rest of the drive. My problem is I have to be able to buy them at Walgreens, walmart, cvs, etc. what do the mmhg numbers I see on them mean? Anyone care to link me which ones they bought at one of the stores I mentioned? I'm sure I'm putting way too much thought into this. Thanks ladies!

Eta- should I get knee or thigh high? When I called the nurse I only asked if I should get socks or stockings and she said stockings.

  • Thanks, I did some more reading and I guess that's the tightness and at least 15mmhg is recommended. Are yours knee or thigh high?

Also I can go to motherhood maternity or pea in the pod if I can find one close to me, if anyone has bought from there and likes them.

  • knee high are more comfortable...mine are medical grade and I do not like the thigh high option.  Previously, I had knee high and those are much better.

  • You can also order several different brands and kinds on Amazon. If you are worried about the selection you might find at a drugstore. The ones I have bought on Amazon include prefers, Gabriella and Thera med. I have only tried the preggers which are footless tights and the Gabriella which are footed tights. But I bought full tights because I have veins in my upper thighs and crotch area. You woul prob be fine with knee or thigh highs.
  • Thanks for the replies! I might check amazon since I have a few days in one area but not sure they would make it in time. I just checked one of the walgreens here in Phoenix and they didn't have them :-(

  • I was told to start off with mild (8-15, I think) and then increase as needed and as tolerated. Right now, the mild work wonderfully for my needs.  I love my knee high ones; I don't know how I'd do with thigh high.

  • Ur doc want write u a prescription? There's a place in Tempe, well that's were my doc told me to go. To get them.

  • Walgreens doesn't have the medical grade ones. They have ones that help with circulation though. My doctor wrote a prescription for medical ones due to varicose veins though.
  • Honestly the lowest number is where you start off then move up if there is no improvement (as a nurse this is what we do with patients in the community who need compression...start low and move up)

  • Thanks! I called the nurse this morning for her opinion and she said since it's only minor swelling with no veins I can start the lowest compression and any from walgreens would work for me. She said the knee high can cause swelling above the knee but I think I would try those first. I can't get a rx, we are currently driving and I see military doctors so I don't even know if they would prescribe them if I was able to be seen by them right now.

We just made it to San Diego where we'll be until the weekend and my feet haven't started swelling today so I think I'll try to find some light compression ones around here. Thanks for all the replies!
