Re: Reading to LO (POLL)

  • I voted for the first one, but that really only happens at night. We read one book every night before bed, and it is the only time he will really stay put for one.

Otherwise, he will grab them off the shelf and open them himself (or ask for help opening one), look at it for a few seconds, then go pick out another one. Rinse. Repeat. I think he just likes piling them up and making messes. lol

  • I voted the first one but it's kind of a combo of sit for the whole book and she wants to turn the pages and interrupt with her baby babel version of the story.

DS still loves books, but he's much less inclined to read a whole book now that he's walking. He has about 10 favorites that he insists on reading all the time, and about 10 more that he'll tolerate for bedtime.

ETA: He gets irritated if someone reads the book "wrong." DH reads a construction book better than I do, apparently, and DS will interrupt me with "all done. Dada read it" after a few pages. I guess I don't do the bulldozer voice right?

  • All the first four options apply here, depending on her mood. There's at least a few books a day for which she will sit still, and she has a couple interactive books she'll look at on her own. Some days, I get to pick the book, others, she wants to choose and will only listen to the books she chose.

  • K will only let me read his truck books that have the name of the truck and a few sounds on each page, or peek-a-boo books. The rest of the books he will bring to me, make me open one page, and then he will hop right up and go grab another, let me open it, and up again to get another...and so on. Its cute, but I worry I don't "read" to him enough since he won't let me! Even the peek-a-boo books he hurriedly lifts all the flaps then turns the page before I can get even the first 5 words out!

  • We are kind of a combination. He has favorites he brings me and will listen intently(little blue truck, a few leap frog books, etc.)...but he will usually pay attention if I pull a new one into the rotation.

  • Is it bad that we don't actually read books to LO? She loves her books, but I've always had the sense that she'll be bored and want to move on to something else if I actually read things word for word. So we tend to talk about the pictures on the pages... sometimes making up a simple story, sometimes just pointing and describing things. She'll happily sit through a bunch of books like that.
  • I voted for the first one because that's how it is 90% of the time. Sometimes she just wants us to flip through a book and look at the pictures with her and other times she just wants to read to herself.

  • I voted for the second, but it's all of the above depending on her mood.  Bedtime book and a few others we generally read in their entirety.  Lots of other are just about the page turning, or pointing out things that I name for her.

  • DS loves books, and he brings me 5-20 books a day to read. I love it since it's an easy activity to do with a newborn on my chest. He loves pointing to all the animals or signing/saying the words he knows. His favorites are the books that we have made interactive by him labeling animals or I used to ask him specific questions, which he now asks me as we read. He's definitely a bookworm, which is a nice compliment to the rest of the day, during which he's climbing, jumping, or running,

  • I feel like I need a combination of two votes.  At bedtime we get through an entire book (or 2 or 3) 99.9% of the time.  During the day it is 50/50.  Sometimes he brings me a book, I read two pages and he is done, other times he will sit for the entire story.  He definitely has some favorites, but regardless of what book it is, he is better at sitting at night than during the day.
