My 9 year old son is on a competitive dance team and they had there first competition this past weekend. Over the summer he was diagnosed with a condition (auto immune)called HSP which causes swelling and severe pain in joints and muscles. It also cause the veins in there body to break causing what looks like a rash to appear on there skin. He was in the PICU and childrens hospital for a month over the summer due to this. Some children deal with the effects of HSP for long periods of time. Luckily for my little dude we caught it in time and where able to do a plasma transfusion which helped get rid of the nasty cells and put in healthy one

This made a huge difference. I watched him for weeks not be able to walk and be wheelchair bound to being able to get up on stage. Well he did a musical theater piece over the weekend and he kicked butt

He got up there and did his thing. His team took 2nd place

so proud. He did not however complete his classes for the weekend ( he was supposed to take 14 classes between sat and sun) due to his knees swelling up and we made an early trip home. But still going from a long hospital stay to dancing in front of hundreds of people....So proud

I've danced for years and coach a competitive team. It's so amazing to see what hardships kids are faced with and overcome to get onstage! Congrats to your son!

Aww glad he is feeling better! I had HSP when I was 7 and I was in the hospital for a week. That's awesome that he's made such great progress!

I think it is honestly due to the transfusion. I know that there is no treatment per say for HSP but hopefully one day they will figure something out. I have not met many people who have had HSP. No one in Michigan so far at all... I feel like I am alone dealing with it all the time....Do you have any side effects from it chillypenguin?

No, I didn't have any lingering side effects. A crappy immune system, but I had that before getting HSP (I had mono 9 months before that in 1st grade). Hope he is back to normal soon!
